Fra Angelico—Blending Renaissance and Gothic Ideas
An excellent painter and a monk of the highest character
Never started a painting without saying a holy prayerSlide3
This painting, The Annunciation, shows how he incorporated some of Masaccio’s ideas (his earlier paintings were done in the Gothic style)
He uses some elements of linear perspective in the architectural setting
However, he is not interested in overlapping the figures, and there is not as much effort to make the figures look round and solid is in Masaccio’s modeling techniques.
The facial expressions are more remote and placid--typical of the Gothic period and less like those of real people.Slide4

Brunelleschi’s
Gothic flatness
Each figure is separate and they do not relate to each other
Can be divided horizontally into 3 layers that are placed one on top of the other to retain Gothic styleSlide10
Ghiberti
More unified whole
Objects overlap in a more natural way
Figures communicate through glances or gestures
Divided vertically into two scenes that tell a part of the story
Reflects the Renaissance qualities of harmony and balance
