The Agony of Defeat? – John 19Slide2

John 19:1-3

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

2

The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe

3

and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.Slide3

John 19:4-7

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

5

When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

6

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, Slide4

John 19:4-7

Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

7

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

 Slide5

John 19:8-15

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,

9

and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.

10

“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11

Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it

not

given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

12

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

13

When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on

judge’s

seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is

Gabbatha

).

14

It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.

15

But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. Slide8

John 19:8-15

We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered

.

John 19:16-18

Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

17

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).

18

There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

John 19:19-27

Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20

Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

21

The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘

King

of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”

22

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. ”So this is what the soldiers did.

25

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of

Clopas

, and

Magdalene

26

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,”

27

and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home

Later

, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

29

A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

30

When he had received the drink, Jesus said

,

It is finished.”

With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Slide15

It is finished!

Was this the agony of defeat, or is it something else?Slide16

It is finished!

What was finished?

What did the cross accomplish?Slide17

Colossians 2:13-15

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,

14

having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

15

 And having disarmed the

powersSlide18

Colossians 2:13-15

and

authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.Slide19

When Jesus said “it is finished” it meant…

Jesus defeated our sin

“Legal indebtedness”

He bore our penalty – our sin

Forgiveness

He triumphed over everything because of the crossSlide20

Ephesians 2:12-19

remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

13

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups

oneSlide21

Ephesians 2:12-19

and

has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,

15

by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,

16

and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death

hostility

17

He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

18

For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his householdSlide23

When Jesus said “it is finished”…

He made a way for us to get to God

He destroyed the barrier that kept us from God

We’re not just forgiven, we’re considered familySlide24

Colossians 1:15-22

15

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

16

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18

 And he is

theSlide25

Colossians 1:15-22

head

of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

19

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,

20

and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on

cross

21

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

22

But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusationSlide27

When Jesus said “it is finished”…

We were reconciled to God

He makes us Holy in His sightSlide28

Are we living in victory or the agony of defeat?

Are you living with Him, or far from Him?

God loves you with a love we can not fathom!

Remember today just what He has done for you!Slide29

1 Corinthians 1:18

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
