Proportion of Americans 65 and older is projected to increase from 12% in 2005 to 20 % by 2030.

That percentage will be even higher in rural areas that already have a greater proportion of geriatric patients.

77% of family physicians offer geriatric care as part of the clinical services being offered in their practices (source: 2016 year-end data from Member Census)
In 2012, out of a total 192.3 million visits to family physicians, 48.9 million visits (25%) were among patients 65 years or older.
Family physicians saw more patients in this age category than any other specialty. Internal medicine physicians were close behind, seeing 46.9 million patients in this same age category. (Source: National Ambulatory Medical Survey)
