Temporary Waived Training and Certification of Nurse Aides To assist with potential staffing challengesAfter employed for 4 months, the CNA must meet the training and certification requirements under §483.35(d). CNAs must demonstrate competency in skills and techniques necessary to care for residents’ needs, as identified through resident assessments, and described in the plan of care.CNAs can be recruited and rehired who retired and/or their2-year certification lapsedAnnual performance reviews and training based on the outcome reviews are waved at this time

3. Reach out to former employees: RN, LPN, CNAFor example: recruit CNAs who did not renew their 2-year CNA certification. Renewal is waived during the pandemic.Reassess unit tasks that can be reassigned to other staff including the Social Workers, PT, OT and SpeechRecruit nursing students and available health care assistants Reassign employees in non-clinical departments to feed residents with training and supervision provided Reach out to people in the community competent to provide basic care to residents with training providedStrategies to Enhance Workforce

Strategies to Enhance Workforce Set up Huddle at the beginning of each shift to communicate any changes with staff such as changes in policies, PPERecognize and support staff who can lead other staff and affect overall positivityEngage Pharmacist to review unnecessary medicationsEngage IDT to work together to eliminate/reduce treatmentsProvide daily review and demonstration of Infection Control practice and correct use of equipmentRecognize when staff need to take a break or need emotional support to deal with death, dying and grief.Post the Emotional Support Helpline 1-844-863-9314Open 8 AM - 10 PM, 7 days/week for staff support

Additional Waivers to Alleviate Workforce StressRelief of 3-Day prior hospitalization requirementKeep accurate logs for admissions, transfers and dischargesRelief of timeframe requirements for submission of: MDS assessments Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ staffing data) Maintain accurate staffing recordsSuspension of Pre-Admission Screening and Annual Resident Review (PASRR) Assessments for 30 days Get specific discharge information re to mental illness Suspension of requirement for resident group participation and physician in-person visits
