Native Americans

In Delaware the Major Native American group was the Lenni-Lenape. They were known as the original people. They were known as kind, peaceful, and fair. Many of their village’s were close to the Delaware river. Wigwams were homes for many of the Lenni-Lenape. They planted corn, beans, and squash also known as the three sisters. They welcomed Europeans and gave up rights to ancestral homelands through trickery of treaties with European settlers.Slide7

Government

The Delaware colony practiced many religions. The system of government at the time was Constitutional Anarchy. They shared their government with Pennsylvania which was based on the democratic rule.Slide10

Why was the colony settled. Who settled it?

Delaware’s original settlers were the Dutch but their settlement didn’t last. After their settlement didn’t last the Swede’s came along. Delaware was a unique colony because it was the only one not originally settled by the Brits. The Swedes came here for trading. They wanted to become a European superpower and trading for tobacco and furs. They also wanted to trade for North American expansion which was what all of the other superpowers were during the 1600s. Delaware Geography

In Delaware the area was mostly flat, costal plains. The northern part was the Piedmont area and had many hills. A Piedmont area is a plateau between the costal plains and the Appalachian mountains. In the southern part of Delaware there were 30,000 acres of swamp land. In Delaware they also shared the Delmarva Peninsula with Maryland and Virginia. Slide12

The Delmarva Peninsula, or simply Delmarva is a large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States, occupied by most of Delaware as well as the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Easter Shore of Virginia. Slide13

Delaware climate

The coastal part of Delaware has a marine climate with mild, wet winters and mild, wet summers. The farming season in the Delaware colony was very similar to Maryland’s growing season.Slide15

Delaware’s natural resources

Delaware has many natural resources. Their variety of wildlife including, beaver, fox, muskrats, otters, and turtles. They also had a variety of fish and shellfish along coastal beaches.Slide16

Trades

The Delaware colony imported furniture, tea, cloth, and other goods. Delaware Exported and grew for themselves wheat, corn, rye, oats, and barley. The rivers powered sawmills and flour mills. Building of dikes, walls built to hold back water.Slide17

1610- English sea captain, Samuel Argall enters bay names it Delaware bay in honor of English Lord De La Warr an earlier governor of Virginia

1620s - Dutch explorer and settle area of New Amsterdam ( New York and New Jersey, and part of which later becomes Delaware )

1630 – First Dutch settlement, Zwaanendael, which means Valley of the Swans, on land purchased from Lenni –

1631_1632- Zwaanendael burned down my Lenape Indians

1637- Peter Minuit brought settlers from Sweden to Delaware ( became first governor)

1655_1664 - Dutch and Swede’s continue to fight over Delaware

A Delaware Colony farmer’s property usually included 50 and 150 acres with a house a barn and a yard

In 1776 the Delaware colony’s assembly voted to break ties with Pennsylvania and with England as well, essentially declaring its independence in a document signed by representatives from all 13 colonies. It joined in the rebellion against Great Britain, along with the other 12 colonies, and laid the groundwork to become a U.S state.
