The Herring Net
The sea has a blue green color to it, not just blue.
The oars represent a triangle, a stable shape.
All the big ships in the background and he focuses on this one.
A man with his son working together. It has a dark stormy background. The waves are high and rough. They are just pulling in the net.The net has herring in it, hence the name.It depicts waves very well.It looks like the son is falling off the boat.Slide3
The Herring Net
Why did he paint this?
Why put the big boats in the background?
Why is it a stormy night?
How did he get this image? Why is the boy falling out of the boat? Why is he fishing with so much competition? How much money will each herring get him?Where is this located? Why is it focused on this boat and not the bigger one’s in the back? Why is he fishing herring and
not any other fish?Slide4
Artist Background
He grew up in a rural area, and most of his paintings involve water involved. He enjoyed isolation and privacy, that may have inspired him in this painting to focus on the smaller boat rather than the bigger boats. Studied oil painting then moved to watercolor paintings.Slide5
Research
Was painted by Winslow Homer in 1885 and named The Herring Net. It was a oil on canvas painting. THe painted depict the heroic efforts of a fisherman and their daily work, pulling in a net of herring. It depicts teamwork, by the man pulling them in and the son unloading them from the net.Slide6

This treaty that was terminated in 1885 limited the number of vessels that a country could have, this is important because this can restrict the amount fishermen there could be.

This is a natural disaster that happened in 1881, where over 100 fisherman lost their lives, this is important because this is a picture of a fisherman who is risking his life, for some herring.Slide7
Conclusion
I believe that this oil painting no only means alot physically but also mentally. Showing the teamwork between the man and the son, spending time together and bonding, as well as putting all this work in to bring food home and put money on the table. It’s alot more than just two people fishing and collecting herring, it shows dedication as well, with them going out and fishing in a storm as well.Slide8
