Preaching is not talking to people about the Bible. It is talking to people about themselves from the Bible.

--Andy StanleySlide5

I Corinthians 1:21

For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by

the foolishness of preaching.

Root word of “foolishness” =

moros

, also the root word of moron (meaning “lacking a grip on reality and acting as though brainless)!Slide7

Galatians 3:1

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?

Before your eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.Slide8
Slide9

Greek –

kerusso

heralding, or, proclaiming the King’s Word!

“Expository exultation”– a preacher thoroughly thrilled with what he has seen passionately proclaiming, “Do you see what the King has for you???”

What to Expect from My Preaching, by John Piper:

If you're used to a twenty-minute, immediately practical, relaxed talk, you won't find that from me for three reasons:

(1) I preach twice that long;

(2) I do not aim to be immediately practical but eternally helpful;

(3) I am not relaxed.Slide10

Preaching does not just come after worship: it is more worship. The Preacher “worships over the word,” depending on the Holy Spirit to draw you into that worship with him!

It contains teaching but its real goal is experience,

not just knowledge or even understanding.

Lecture: sees truth and shows it;

Sermon: sees the glory of truth and breaks it open for all to partake…Slide11

Romans 10:17 (NET) “...faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word of Christ.” PREACHING awakens you to the possibilities IN HIM (realms of unexplored potential for your life)!

If you are a Christian, the preached message introduces you to what has already been put inside you! (Rather than telling you what you don’t have.)

I John 2:20, 27

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.

And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.Slide12

Hebrews 8:10-11 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.…

Old Covenant preaching called Israel to repentance.

New Covenant preaching calls all people to the cross and the cross-shaped Kingdom—in all its possibilities—WHICH ARE NOW CODED INTO YOUR SPIRITUAL DNA!!!!!

(If you are a “pre-Christian,” preaching awakens you to the possibilities in Christ for the first time…)Slide13

Romans 10:13-15, 17 tells us how vital preaching is

:

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”…Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.Slide14

Ephesians 2:8:Slide15

I Corinthians 5:7

…Christ, our Passover lamb has been sacrificed…Slide16

Exodus 12:7-11

Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.Slide17

Acts 5:20

Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.Slide21

ECCLESIASTES = the preacher!

The book spans a broad array of subjects, concluding after every one, “Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.” (The word vanity is used 38 times.)

All IS vanity without the view from the SPIRIT!!! No one knows this more than the “preacher”. BUT…the converse is also true! The whole of life has meaning through the eyes of the cross!!!Slide22

Preaching centers on the cross (grace)!Slide23

I Corinthians 1:18

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved it is the power of God.

I Corinthians 1:23

But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God.Slide24

God gave Isaiah an object lesson before He sent him off to preach

:

Isaiah 6:6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"Slide29

Roasting with fire—keeps the message from being just:

-Sentimental

-Religious

-Merely moral

How to cooperate with preaching

:

EXPECT your faith to be built by it!

Believe that it is a gift from God, given to help express your unique DNA in Him!

3. Always “Ask for a take-home!”

Listen “heart-forward” (Let your reason take a backseat for a while.)

Listen for the Voice within the voice (within the voice).

6. Be creative in finding ways to act on what you receive!Slide33
