The Importance of a Birthright

The physical advantages of the birthright But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his. Deuteronomy 21:17

The spiritual advantages of this birthright And give you the blessing of Abraham, To you and your descendants with you, That you may inherit the land In which you are a stranger, Which God gave to Abraham.” Genesis 28:4

The spiritual advantages of this birthright 1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3

Esau’s Trade 29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. 31 But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” 32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?” 33 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Genesis 25:29-34

Esau’s Trade lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. Hebrews 12:16

The Christian’s Birthright

What is our birthright? And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29

What is our birthright? 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. Romans 8:16-17

What is our birthright? that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:7

What is our birthright? Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? James 2:5

What is our birthright? for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:11

Do people exchange things for their birthright today? 24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. Hebrews 11:24-26

Do people exchange things for their birthright today? Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15

Do people exchange things for their birthright today? Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4

Do people exchange things for their birthright today? Walking after the flesh rather than after the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-26

Lessons For Us Today

How to hold on to your birthright. Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: Hebrews 12:14

How to hold on to your birthright. 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

How to hold on to your birthright. 7 But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Results of not holding on to your birthright. looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; Hebrews 12:15

Conclusion 1. Looking into the future can prevent us from making poor decisions today. 2. Esau missed out on a lot because of his inability to consider the future or future blessings.
