By Katrina, Jama, Lucia, and ZacharySlide2

What does “Reality vs. Ideality” mean?

reality: the state of existence (no definitive answer, however)

ideality: the state/quality of being ideal

philosophical perspective:

reality: the objective world in which we live that collectively no one fully understands

“Why not teach…”Slide5

What does “Facing Your Fears” mean?

Fear (ˈfir) noun

-

an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

Facing your fears usually takes a 3-part process (

Keys to Success

)

Phase 1: Identify your fear

This means that you have to think about those god awful nightmares you used to have as a kid

Phase 2: Build the courage

Get the thought in your head until near nausea that this fear is real and it is conquerable

Phase 3: Leap of Faith

Every plan seems perfect before execution, this is the part where you grow a set and finally face your fears

These keys to success are essential and universal (can help get over any fear)Slide6

Facing your Fears

Evasion does not cure hypersensitivity of student

Elevator Example

Focus on solutions that help to overcome hypersensitivity and triggers

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Reduces exposure and ability to think critically about controversial/uncomfortable topic

Students are unprepared to face uncomfortable topics when entering adulthood. Slide8

Why are these themes important?

Supports the main claim that catering to the hypersensitivity of college student is disastrous for their transition life after college and overcoming their hypersensitivities. Slide9

Discussion Questions:

How can one effectively avoid prioritizing a state of perfection in order to realize the harms of microaggressive words and ideas?

Does one theme seem to be more prevalent in the argument than the other? If so, which one and why?

How do the different modes of multimodality used within the argument represent either of the main themes identified? (“You have to face your fears” or “The conflict between reality and Ideality”)
