3. Start compressions.

What if you don’t see it?
Ensure adequate head tilt chin lift.
Make sure breaths are around 1 sec each. Don’t ventilate too quickly.

How do you ventilate?
Use OPA/NPA unless contraindicated due to:

2-person ventilating technique
OPA: gag reflex
Both: head/facial trauma
Important
: Make sure suctioning equipment is on hand and use as needed.Slide7
4. Use the AED.
What should you make sure of before you use it?
No clothing.
No water.
Then just follow the instructions…
While waiting for AED to charge,
resume compressions.
and
IMPORTANT
: make sure no one is touching the patient when AED says: “Do not touch the patient.”

5. Patient regains pulse.
Check breathing.
If not breathing, what do you do?
Rescue breathing: once every 5-6 seconds
6. PATIENT REGAINS BREATHING.
High flow oxygen & shock position.
Reassess vitals every 5 minutes.

If the dispatch call was for a 9 year old…
Use pediatric AED pads.
Rescue breathing: one breath every 3-5 seconds
Depth: ~ 2 inches (1/3 AP diameter)
