GetanoldCDoraround,plasticlid(ofabiscuittinforexample).Heata25PaisecoinandinsertithalfwayintothecenteroftheCDholesothatthecoinisper-pendiculartotheCD.ThehotcoinwillmelttwoslotsoneachsideofthecenterCDholeandwillstickinthemiddleoftheCDwhenitcoolsdown.Alternatively, FIG.4:BlackandwhitepatternonBenham'sdisk. pokeaverysmallholeinthemiddleoftheplasticlidandstickamatchstickortoothpickhalfwaythroughit.Yourspinnerisnowready-twistthecoin(orthetoothpick)tospinthespinner. 2. Printordrawtheblackandwhitepatternsshowninthe gure,ontoasheetofpaperandcutitoutinacircularshape.Makeasmallslitinthecenterofthecircularpatternand tthepaperontothecoinortoothpicksothatthepatternlies atontheCD(orplastic)spinner. 3. Spinthespinnerinsunlightandseeifyoucanobservethecolors! 4. Changetheconditionsoftheexperiment:spinthespin-nerclockwiseandthenanticlockwise,changethelight-ingfromsunlightto uorescent,andmakeyourownpatternusingablackpentodrawaseriesofarcs.Recordyourresultsandreachyourownconclusions.
