Self Defense

When hedgehogs feel threatened, they roll up into a ball with only their spines sticking out.

If a hedgehog is dropped into water, it must unroll to survive. At this time, the hedgehog is at its weakest. It can be attacked easily.

If an animal bites into a hedgehog while it is rolled up, the spines stick into the animal’s skin.Slide6

Facts A

bout Hedgehogs

There are 5 kinds of hedgehog:

European Hedgehogs,

Algerian Hedgehogs,

African Hedgehogs,

Tenrecs

and

Long-Eared Hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs hibernate in the winter. They do this to conserve energy when food is scarce.Slide7

Baby Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs can have between 2 and 7 babies at a time. They usually have 4 or 5 in a litter.

Tenrecs can have up to 32 babies at a time!

The desert hedgehog has young only once a year.

The babies are born blind, pink and helpless.

When they are 3 weeks old, the mother leads the family out of the nest each night to look for food.

The young become independent at about 4 to 6 weeks of age. The family then splits up and each one lives on its own.Slide8
