Warm Up 10/10
Everyday, I do the dishes. It’s the same thing: I unload the dirties, inevitably finding a few that the dishwasher has missed, and then fill up the dishwasher with the dishes that my family has been tossing in the sink all day. What repetitive, and sometimes seemingly meaningless tasks, do you do regularly? Think of as many as you can.Slide2

Notes (3) Moral Individualism
Soren
Keirkegaard
(pronounced
cake-err-guard
) was the first man to use the word “existential.”
He reacted against the idea that the highest ethical good is the same for everyone.
Instead
, the highest ethical good must be determined by each individual based on his/her experiences
.
Existentialists argue that no objective, rational basis can be found for moral decisions.Slide6
Notes (4) Subjectivity
Personal experience and acting on ones own convictions are essential in arriving at truth
.
This has made existentialists skeptical of systematic reasoning so when they write, they are often INTENTIONALLY not systematic in their explanations.Slide7
Notes (5) Choice
Choice is the most prominent theme in existentialist writing.
Human’s primary distinction from other animals is his ability to choose.
Each human being makes choices which create his/her own nature.
As human beings must make choices, facing the consequences of these choices is IMPLICIT. The accepting of consequences for actions should be expected.Slide8
Notes (6) Dread and Anxiety
Dread
is a crucial element of existentialist theory. It refers to the feeling of
general apprehension one feels after having accepted that life is meaningless by itself,
and it is up to the individual to create meaning (Kierkegaard).
Anxiety
is similar in that it refers to the individual’s confrontation with nothingness and
with the impossibility of finding ultimate justification for the choices
they
must make
(
Heidagger
).Slide9
