Tonight you’ll be given some information to help you make that decision.Slide12
Tonight we’re going to focus on television in your home.
I will mention accessing media through apps on phones and tablets where applicableSlide13
What is Streaming?Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider. Its verb form, "to stream", refers to the process of delivering media in this manner; the term refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than the medium itself
.A client media player can begin playing the data (such as a movie) before the entire file has been transmitted. Distinguishing delivery method from the media distributed applies specifically to telecommunications networks, as most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g., radio, television) or inherently nonstreaming (e.g., books, video cassettes, audio CDs).

Antenna: A Love Story
Today I did it! Cut the cord by going to over-the-air digital TV. After trying a number of indoor antennas with no success, I found a local company to install a roof top antenna. It is a Winegard HD8200 with a signal amplifier and is pulling in 67 channels! Many of the channels are duplicates or foreign, so the real desirable channel count is more in the neighborhood of 33. Receiving ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS from NY and CT. Cable bill has been cut from $194 for TV, phone and internet to $64.90 for internet. Have signed up to trial Sling TV, because have two family member who like CNN and HGTV among others.
The local company who did the antenna install was very good. Two gentlemen came out to install the antenna, hook up the TV’s and set up the channels on both TV’s (one in basement and one in living room). The image is stunning - full HD. I like some local news and even though the antenna is aimed toward NYC, WTNH in New Haven comes in clear - full HD.
The name of the local antenna company is Allied Satellite & Antenna, Inc. They are located on North Benson Road in Fairfield and Bryan could not have provided better service. Because of my lack of indoor success I asked what would happen if we did not get a good number of channels. Bryan reassured me that Fairfield is a great location for OTA TV, but also said if we were not happy, then he would work out a fair price to cover his time putting equipment up and then removing it if necessary. Based on the research I had done I thought this was a good risk, so went ahead with Bryan’s reassuring service. His normal rate is $300-$550 for installation and set-up - includes labor and all necessary equipment. I will pay $400 because there was a cable already in place on my roof from an old Direct TV dish.
I like to watch football, but I’m thinking between major networks and ESPN on Sling TV I should be fine. My guess is since CBS is now selling direct streaming it won’t be long for more content providers to follow — perhaps even the NFL. Then, perhaps I will be able to get the out-of-market games I really want.
Again, thank you so much for your workshop. I’m excited to be rid of the cable bill and have more control over our TV watching experience. Your workshop was excellent and helped me to better understand the new landscape. I have literally been thinking about cutting the cord for over 2 years, but without your workshop would not have felt confident enough to actually go through with it. Additionally, I would not have been well armed with the knowledge of how to approach and manage the effort. Therefore, my guess is without having the knowledge you conveyed with your
powerpoint
I would not have been successful even if I had attempted cutting the cord. Can’t thank you enough!
I’ll let you know how things develop as we live with the new norm of OTA TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Netflix and Sling TV.
actual email from a Fairfield, CT Cut the Cord attendee – April 2016
I
just wanted to let you know that I took the big step and called Allied Satellites to install an antenna. I have to say Brian was and is overboard helpful in the transition. I'm still learning how to use an antenna and streaming. I want to thank you for your part in all this. By attending your class 2 years ago and last year I learned about alternative television. Before that, I didn't even know it existed. Admittedly, I was not quick to switch. But at my age and with my limited knowledge, I needed the 2 years to mull it over and understand it. Now I'm trying to explain it to my friends because my bill went from $228 a month to $84 a month

Helps you decide which services to purchase and estimate cost.“These days, streaming TV apps are seemingly everywhere. More than your run-of-the-mill Netflix or Hulu, new services from companies such as AT&T, Dish Network and even Google, which launched a service in April, are promising to help you watch live cable shows from any Internet-connected device — without a traditional TV subscription.
But the marketplace for these apps can be confusing; every service seems to support a different set of channels at a dizzying range of price points. So which live TV app might serve you best?”washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/create-your-ideal-streaming-bundle
