Slide3

What is RAFT?

RAFT is a writing strategy used to help students process what they are learning. It provides a focused writing assignment and encourages students to analyze a topic from a different point of view. With this strategy, students learn to effectively communicate their ideas to a specific audience. Students also learn to think critically and make connections they would not normally make. Slide4

RAFT?

When using the RAFT strategy, students use the following format:

R- Role

Who are you as a writer?

A- Audience

Who will read this? To whom are you writing?

F- Format

In what format are you writing? A letter? A poem?

T- Topic

What are you writing about? Slide5

How to use RAFT?

The RAFT strategy is very simple to implement. There are no special materials needed. However, many teachers choose to present the strategy in the form of a table. This helps students stay organized when planning their writing.

Teachers may also choose to give students a variety of options when creating a RAFT piece. The image to the right shows how the RAFT writing strategy can be used in any subject area, giving students different options to choose from. Slide7

Who benefits from RAFT?

The RAFT strategy

can be differentiated by readiness level, learning profile, and student interest. It can be tailored to meet the needs of every student.

Students who require guided instruction benefit from being given the role, the audience, the format, and the topic. This allows them to focus on one topic and one point of view at a time. This allows them to master the use of the strategy.

Students who have mastered the RAFT strategy can be given a variety of options (like we saw in the previous slide).

They

can also be given the option to create their own!

This

fosters creativity! Slide8

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Fosters creativity

Encourages critical thinking

Incorporates writing into content areas

Can show students who writing relates to real word situations

Teaches students how to create organized writing

Disadvantages

Students only consider one point of view per writing activity. Slide9

When to use RAFT?

RAFT can be used at any point during a lesson. However, using RAFT at the end of a unit is very beneficial. For example, after completing a class chapter book, student can be given a RAFT writing activity where they evaluate a topic discussed in the book through the point of view of a character.

RAFT activities can be used in any grade level in any subject area. Slide10

What does the research say?

The RAFT strategy is mentioned as an effective writing strategy in

Project CRISS: Creating Independence through student owned strategies.

It is suggested that the RAFT strategy is a great tool to help students become better writers and learn to communicate their ideas effectively.
