V for Vendetta Essay WritingSlide2
A film essay
There are a lot of similarities between the essay you will write about a film, and the essay you will write about a written text.
Same structure
Same kinds of questions
However there are a few differences
Director and viewer not author and reader
Evidence- you need to refer to film techniquesSlide3
Questions
The questions have two parts, they ask you to describe something and then explain how that helps you to understand something, affects something, develops something etc.
E.g. Describe an important event in the visual text. Explain how this event had positive and/or negative impact on characters
You will be given a range of questions to choose from Slide4
Structure
Introduction
At least 3 body paragraphs
ConclusionSlide5
Introduction

film and the director
Provide a brief, one sentence overview of what the film is about.

Body Paragraphs

Body Paragraphs Structure
Statement-
your topic sentence needs to include key words from the question. Clearly state what idea your paragraph will focus on.
Example-
a sentence including a quote from the text which supports the point that you have made.
Explanation-
you now need to explain HOW your quote supports the idea you are discussing in the paragraph, making sure you are linking to the question.
Link-
link your point to the
director’s
purpose (WHY have they done this)
and comment on the wider relevance of your pointSlide8
Evidence
In a film essay the specific evidence you need to use to support your points is film techniques.
These include camera work, lighting, costume, sound, music etc.
When you provide quotes you must refer to them as ‘dialogue’
You need to refer to more than just dialogue in your essay.Slide9
Conclusion
The purpose is to summarise your essay
You must include key words from the question
Restate your main points
You should also aim to make a broader comment about the wider relevance of your essay to society if you have not already done so.Slide10
Things to remember to include
Comments on director’s purpose.
You should aim to weave this throughout e.g. “
McTeigue
uses lighting…” and also comment on the director’s wider purpose in your conclusion.
Comments on wider relevance;
Again you should aim to weave this throughout- how are each of your points relevant to the wider film? How are they relevant to the world? You can make a broader comment about this in your conclusion or in a final body paragraph.Slide11
