Ryan, a carpenter for the college, has a small project he is working on at home. He plans to take a few tools from the college to use at home over the weekend and figures it is permissible since he knows how to use the tools and they will be returned before work on Monday morning. Ryan assumes this is ok, because his supervisor frequently takes home a
college issued
laptop computer.
Is this ethical?
Ethical Scenario OneSlide5
No, it would be inappropriate and a misuse of college resources for an employee to take college property
home or off the premises for personal use.
Only
those property items permitted to be taken off campus (e.g., laptops with appropriate
approval, etc.) may be used outside of the workplace. All college resources should be restricted to use for college business.
Solution OneSlide6
Joe requested sick leave for the death of a family member. While he was on leave, his supervisor was informed by another staff member that Joe was actually on vacation and did not have a death in the family. Per further review and analysis, the supervisor discovered the family member listed on the
leave form
had actually passed away several years earlier. Joe did not have sufficient benefit time remaining to take vacation, so he had reported a death in the family to obtain additional time off.
Ethical Scenario TwoSlide7
This is an example of a misuse of college time (a college resource) and is an offense for which discipline would be appropriate. Additionally, the employee was not truthful in his communications and falsified time records by providing fraudulent leave justification.
College employees
are required to be truthful in all communications, whether they are oral or written.
Solution TwoSlide8
