Baptism Saves

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.1 Peter 3:21

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16

“…believeth or is baptized…”This does not say,

Baptism Is Not Optional

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38 “Every one of you” does not imply that this is optional.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matthew 28:19,20 “Baptizing them (disciples)…” is His command for the entire world.

Saved By…

by many things… The scripture says we are saved

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 Saved by Jesus.

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved .Matthew 10:22 Saved by enduring to the end.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. Mark 8:35 Saved by losing our lives for Christ.

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16 Saved by belief and baptism.

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins. Luke 1:77 Saved by remission of sins.

And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. Luke 7:50 Saved by faith.

But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. John 5:34 Saved by the words of Christ.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21 Saved by calling on the name of the Lord.

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. Acts 15:11 Saved by the grace of Jesus.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 Saved by the gospel.

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? Romans 8:24 Saved by hope.

And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.Romans 11:26 Saved by turning away ungodliness.

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21 Saved by preaching.

If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 1 Corinthians 3:15 Saved by “fire.”

To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Corinthians 5:5 Saved by the destruction of the flesh.

And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 2 Corinthians 1:6 Saved by affliction and comfort.

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.2 Corinthians 7:10 Saved by repentance.

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved.) Ephesians 2:5 Saved by grace.

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12 Saved by work, fear, and trembling.

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 Saved by loving the truth.

Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. 1 Timothy 4:16 Continuing in the doctrine.

Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:10 Saved by being in Christ.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Titus 3:5 Saved by mercy and washing.

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. Hebrews 5:9 Saved by obeying.

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. James 5:20 Saved by conversion from error.

Why Would God Require Baptism?

God tests people!

I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. 1 Chronicles 29:17

Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. Psalm 7:9

But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. 1 Thessalonians 2:4

Why does God try people’s hearts?

Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. Exodus 16:4

I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. Judges 2:21,22

Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan.Judges 3:1

are being tested to see if they will trust the clear statement of scripture over their tradition, and their friends and family. People who reject salvation by baptism

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household . He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matthew 10:34-37

Baptism Is by Water

Only One Baptism For All Time

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all .Ephesians 4:4-6 This statement must be true in some sense. Which baptism is this?

Baptism Is a Burial in Water

“From a derivative of G911; to make whelmed (that is, fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: - baptist, baptize, wash.” Baptize ( βαπτιζω )

“A primary verb; to whelm , that is, cover wholly with a fluid; in the New Testament only in a qualified or specific sense, that is, (literally) to moisten (a part of one's person), or (by implication) to stain (as with dye): - dip.” Strong’s G911 ( βαπτω )

verb: “to submerge; engulf.” whelm [ hwelm , welm ]

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:12

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.Matthew 3:16

A Baptized Person Must Also Believe

Baptism Is for Remission of Sins after Repentance

The One Being Baptized Must Be a Disciple

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matthew 28:19,20 “Teach” is literally μαθητευω “to make a disciple.”

So… what’s a disciple?

The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Luke 6:40 He didn’t say, “Baptize perfect disciples.”

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord… Matthew 10:24,25

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.Luke 14:26,27

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.John 8:31

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. John 15:8

Baptism Must Be in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

We Are Baptized into Christ and into the Church

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:24 Redemption is in Christ.

There is therefore now no condem-nation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1 No condemnation is in Christ.

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:39 Love of God is in Christ.

Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.1 Corinthians 1:2 Sanctification is in Christ.

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22 Life is in Christ.

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.2 Corinthians 2:14 Triumph is in Christ.

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19 Reconciliation is in Christ.

Our Sins Are Washed Away by Baptism

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16

NT Baptism Was Almost Always Immediate

But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Acts 8:12

People Were Re-baptized

Did God Make Exceptions to the Requirement of Baptism?

Didn’t Jesus make an exception for him? What about the thief on the cross?

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly ; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Luke 23:39-43

To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Luke 23:39-43

The thief was saved. The thief died after Jesus died. What we know for certain:

Theft was a way of life for this man. The thief was not baptized and not a disciple of Jesus. What people assume :

to get the death sentence, and there was no statute of limitations. Under Roman law you only had to steal once

and Jesus had only been teaching for about 3 years. for years prior to his crucifixion,This thief may not have stolen anything at all

He understood things about the kingdom that even the apostles didn’t understand.This man may have been a faithful disciple of Jesus.

And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Luke 23:41,42

that the thief was not baptized and not a disciple! It is impossible to prove

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to himMatthew 3:1-6

When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples ,)John 4:1,2

God Makes a Way for Those He Can Reach

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

God searches for truly receptive hearts.

I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.Jeremiah 17:10

And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. Revelation 2:23

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:27,28

Nobody Really Dies by Accident

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered . Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.Matthew 10:29

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.John 15:15 Notice how “without” is used here. This is agency, not just knowledge.

Not Sent to Baptize

but this does not imply that baptism was not required. and Jesus, Himself, did not baptize, Paul was not sent to baptize,

Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should1 Corinthians 1:13-17

be made of none effect. 1 Corinthians 1:13-17

imply that the disciples he made did not need to be baptized?Does the fact that Paul did not personally baptize

When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples.)John 4:1,2 Just because Jesus and Paul did not personally baptize these disciples did not mean they weren’t baptized at all!

in all the world! The Great Commission was for all disciples
