Mslaba DUMILE Feni „The anguished woman“ , bronze in an edition of 4 – unsigned – unnumbered - undated A brief note about this work The above bronze was cast on behalf of a n unrecorded person in an edition of 4, p robably late 1967 or early 1968 . P rior to this an edition for bronzes by DUMILE was limited to 3 casts , such as when DUMILE showed with Gallery 101 and the Adler Fielding Galleries, Johannesburg, in 1966 and 1967. A cast of this work is first recorded in the Collection of the University of Fort Hare, Alice , as “Untitled”, illustrated in “ Images of Man ” (de Jager) (FH University Press), 1992, ill. 64, p. 63 - ISBN 1 - 86810 - 015 - 4 Another cast was offered by Stephan Welz & Co., Johannesburg, on 13 th May, 2002 as Lot 262, originating from the collection of Berna rd Janks, Johannesburg, who had received it from D UMILE in recognition of his assistance and support. It was named “An anguished woman”. This cast was acquired by and was still in the collection of Jans Borman, Cape Town, in 2012. A third cast is in the collection of Bruce Campbell - Smith , illustrated in “Revisions” ( Hayden Proud ) (SAHO/UNISA), 2006, ill. 146, p. 182 – ISBN 1 - 874817 - 33 - 2 A fourth cast acquired from Bernardi Auctioneers in Pretoria in 2002 was i n the collection of Omar Badsha per 2012. According to a statement of provenance made by the family of Bernard Janks, 4 casts were made and the original was then destroyed.
