Slide2WIDA AND THE COMMON CORE
October 16th
, 2014
Presented by The ELL Services Department
Slide3What in the world is WiDA?
World ClassInstructional Design and
Assessment
Slide4WIDA is…
a consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English Language Learners.
www.wida.us
Slide5How do we use WIDA?
ESL teachers use these standards, alongside the content standards of Common Core/Essential Standards to…Meet the needs of students enrolled in a ESL programAssign appropriate accommodations and modifications based on proficiency levelsScaffold instruction for ELLs
Classroom teachers use these standards to build and differentiate instruction and assessment for English Language Learners.
Slide6The Common Core
Mission: The Common Core State Standards are designed to ensure real understanding. The materials are designed to go deeper into fewer topics, so kids
master the material instead of memorizing. At the same time, the learning is more hands-on with a focus on what students will use in life.
Slide7To put it in better terms…
Common Core is the contentWIDA is the language
The SIOP model contains the components to help implement content and languageThere are many upcoming SIOP trainings, please see the New Teacher Blog and MyTalent for PD opportunities!
Slide8Getting to know your students…
Let’s look at the WiDA data for a student…Example:
Van’s ACCESS report states that his scores are asfollows: Listening: 4.0Speaking: 2.2Reading: 3.4
Writing: 3.5
*But I also want to take a look at his overall performance on various assignments in the classroom.
Slide9How
would I plot Van on the Can Do Descriptors to inform my teaching?
Slide10How does
this fit into Common Core?Let’s take another look at our Speaking Can Do Descriptors
Slide11Here is a Common Core Speaking Standard:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy. SL.8.1a Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion.
Slide12Let’s Go a Step Further!
How do we look at the proficiency levels, the Can Do Descriptors, and a Classroom Rubric for grading a Speaking assignment?Pull out your Student Scenario papers (green
paper) Pull out your Speaking Rubric (blue paper)
The Speaking Can Do Descriptors
(white chart)
Slide13Rubric
Slide14Student Scenarios
Read over the assignment at the top of the page. (green paper)Let’s look at the Example Scenario which introduces Van a little more than just his ACCESS scores. Here is Van’s Response:
“I think Anne think she will survive war. When there war all around you, all you want is to live. I know that when war was by me, I just want to get out and live. Anne wants same thing. She want to live. She write about it in her diary. That is what I think?”
Slide15However, as
a teacher I may…Ask Van if he can tell me more about the story Provide him with sentence starters or access to his notes on the storyGive him visual clues or allow him to look through book before asking him to respond again
Slide16But….
Let’s say this was his overall response...How would you grade him… taking into account CONTENT demands AND LANGUAGE level?
Slide17Rubric
Remember his Language with the Can Do Descriptors
Remember the standards Van must express
What score would you assign to Van?
Slide18Let’s Assess: Your Turn
Look at: Student Scenarios (Green Paper)Can Do Descriptors (White Chart)
Speaking Rubric (Blue Paper)And
Assess
the student given to your group just like we
modeled. You have 5 minutes!
Slide19Let’s Discuss
Think, pair, share timeThink about how you assessed each student and whyPair with an elbow buddy and share your placement of the student and reasoning
Be prepared to share with group
