This site was used

by

the

maya since the year 200 B.C. until around 1,200 A.C. as the most important sea port for their

exports coming

from the central plains

and Petén.

In

the

the

year 1,524, Hernán Cortez, conqueror of

Mexico, sent a

letter

to Carlos V, King of Spain, explaining that Gil de Ávila came to live with 60 men and 5 women in the site called «Nito» Cerro San Gil, which is behind the site is named after him.
