Current situation of ASF

Since 2020, ASF has been reported in 45 countries, 19 affected countries in Europe

Since January 2020, 10 countries reported ASF as first occurrence, while 13 countries reported its spread to new zones.

In 2022 alone, 3 countries reported the first occurrence of ASF: Thailand, Nepal, North Macedonia; recurrence of ASF in mainland Italy, further expansion of disease in Germany

Every 2 weeks, the WOAH produces an update of the ASF situation according to the information submitted by countries through WAHIS:

Recognising ASF as a priority TAD, the ‘Global

Control of African Swine Fever: A GF-TADs Initiative’ was launched in 2020 under the GF-TADs framework:

Global Initiative

Objective 1.

 Improve the

capability of countries

to control (prevent, respond, eradicate) ASF using OIE standards and best practices that are based on the latest science.

Objective 2.

 Establish an effective

coordination and cooperation framework for the global control of ASF.Objective 3. Facilitate business continuity.

Global Initiative stems from regional initiatives and promotes regular exchange of experiences across regions and partners

Framework to ensure synergy and good coordination, with

outputs, outcomes and indicators attached to objectives

ASF Working Group established to steer and monitor the implementation of the Global Initiative and contribute to development and support of ASF control strategies at global and regional levels

Members:

Four regional SGEs established: Africa (2022), Americas (2019), Asia-Pacific (2019), Europe (2014)

Technical forum that brings together decision makers and experts to coordinate regional efforts and address ASF control in collaborative and harmonised manner across the region

Promote regular exchange of information and best practices in ASF management

Instrumental in supporting the Global Initiative

Standing Group of Experts

Proposal: Coordination meeting between regional SGEs

Strengthen inter-regional cooperation and dialogue on ASF prevention and control

Inform strategic priorities common across the 4 regions

Review progress of Global Initiative

Provide recommendations to the ASF WG

Summary of point-of-care test kits to enable rapid testing at point of disease to support field workers, practitioners and decision-makers

Monitoring and Evaluation of the Global Initiative

Objective

Provide accountability to stakeholders through demonstrating results and outcomes achieved.

Enable responsiveness to achieve desired goals, maintaining a dynamic strategy that is adaptable to changing external circumstances, and can be adjusted for continued alignment with goals

Provide a tool to support the monitoring of effectiveness of activities, thereby informing decision-making and providing direction to those implementing the ASF GI.

Monitoring and Evaluation of the Global Initiative

Developed logical framework with outcome and output indicators Most data to be derived from FAO and WOAH staff on activities conducted, guidelines developed etc…

Outcome indicators (1 & 3) to be based on self-evaluation by countries on capacity of Veterinary Services specific to ASF

 gives us important information on your needs & measure how we are progressing in the GI
