A letter of recommendation
should include a brief explanation of how the two parties know each other, how long you’ve been acquainted, and why the person writing the letter is in a position to endorse the Beacon applicant.
The letter should include
a summary of the applicants skills, the responsibilities they fulfilled while working with the reference and the qualifications they possess. Character strengths such as perseverance, diligence, attention to detail, etc. are appropriate and important to include.
Letters of Recommendation
often close by summarizing why this applicant will be successful in their chosen endeavor.

.
PBA Pro Tip
Make sure your letter of recommendation is signed! An actual signature lends authenticity.

Whether on social media or within a physical book, job seekers need a portfolio of images to showcase their technical skills, interests and personal style.
Applying to Beacon is the perfect opportunity to
start
or
add
to your portfolio of images
.

As a social media expert, I understand the power of imagery. When I judge Beacon, I appreciate portfolios that tell a story or show bold styles.
Your photos should reflect your chosen career path
; emphasize nails if you plan on being a nail tech or show us your best makeup work if you aspire to be a makeup artist.
Above and beyond: show a variety of techniques.
Start branding yourself!
Consider putting each of your clients in the same location when you take their photo. Develop consistency with your angles, your lighting and the look/feel of your images.

Feel free to take picture of your clients, friends or mannequins.
If you plan to do editorial or session work, you are free to conduct and present images from a photo shoot, but that’s not our expectation.
Beacon is not a photographic competition, so relax and have fun capturing your skills!

What is a Marketing Piece
?
This creative piece is your chance to tell future employers and clients what you’re passionate about and what your career goals are. Market yourself
or
a business idea.
The marketing piece is
worth 40% of your Beacon entry,
so make sure you have a clear message and a plan to stand out from the other competitors. Come up with your OWN concept, but read on for some examples from other entrants:
Q:
A:
Photo for educational purposes only; these Beacon alumni had their own great marketing ideas!
My goal is to become a
salon owner
, so I created a mock website for my future salon. I included client testimonials, staff photos & bios, a service list and pricing! Creating this site made me think about so many aspects of my future salon!
I want to be a
platform artist
for a color manufacturer in the future! I needed the Beacon judges to see me in the act of educating on a grand scale, so I filmed myself in front of my school during a special assembly. The stage was just taped off, but I had a microphone, a model and a cheering crowd (of friends!).
I have a DIY makeup line that I’m preparing to take to the next level! My marketing piece was a fully developed
social media plan
for an Instagram business page. I submitted a plan containing sample posts, product images & descriptions, an engagement strategy and community building methods.

great idea?Slide10
