About the engraver

was born in London, England on July 28, 1836 and died on August 12, 1873

Joseph’s most important work was when he had to engrave a medal of James Watt.

Joseph was mostly educated by his father

He studied in the school of Royal Academy where he earned two silver medalsSlide3

The Description of the Confederate Seal

The

seal has a portrait of George

Washington.

Deo Vindice means “under god/our V

indicator”

The

wreath around the seal is up made of cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, wheat, and rice.Slide4

History of the Confederate Seal

The Confederate States are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia.

The date on the seal was made for the remembrance of Jefferson Davis’s start as president of the Confederate States.

When the seal was finished it was given to Lieutenant Chapman to bring the seal to America.

Towards the end of the American Civil War, the seal disappeared during an evacuation in Richmond.Slide5

Why is it Important ?

The Confederate Seal is important because it was the first emblem that represented the Confederacy.

The seal was used during the American Civil War to Make the Confederate States there own country.

Another reason why the Confederate Seal is important is because it represents the beginning of the Government of the Confederate States.

What I Think is Interesting

What I think that is interesting about the Great Seal of the Confederacy is the story of what its made of, the quest to get the seal to Richmond, Virginia and how it was used during the American Civil War. Slide7
