WHAT IS A PACKER LB?

A leader on the field, in the hallways and classroom, and in the community.

A player who has a relentless passion for contact & understands that pain is just part of the game.

A smart player who has the ability to not only control the defensive front but also the defensive coverage if necessary.

A tackling machine because the only thing that matters is getting the ball carrier on the ground and the offense to huddle back up.

A player who takes the small things to heart because he knows it is those small things that make the difference between a defensive stand and a 1

st

down.

4Slide5

LINEBACKER GOALS

Punish anyone who gets in my way on every play. Never loaf.

No missed tackles.

Force a turnover.

Make a tackle for a loss.

No mental bust.

Be emotional!!!!

LINEBACKER TECHNIQUE – Stance & First

StepS

Stance:

Feet are shoulder width apart.

Knees are bent and heels are almost flat on the ground.

The weight of my body should be on the inside balls of my feet.

Back is straight and head is up.

Arms are in a relaxed position but are not resting on my thighs or knees.

7First Step: The first step for a linebacker is essentially a 6 inch read step no wider than a 45 degree angle which gains ground toward the line of scrimmage. . Slide8

This drill will progress to a drive for 5yds like the drill pictured. Roll tackle will also be used off this drill.Slide13

NUT CRACKER Partner up. 1 Lb & 1 RB

LB will slide into 1st hole along with the RB.Once the LB enters the hole, the rb steps forward giving him a clean target.

The LB will collision with near shoulder & near foot and shoot arms wide (not wrapping up the RB), and roll the hips upward creating power.

This should only be 1 step for the LB once contact is made.

They will then both back peddle out of the hole keeping their hips and butts in a hitting position . Once out of the hole, reset to a hitting position.

This process is repeated until the last hole where the LB will wrap and drive for 5 or until a whistle is blown.

13

RB

LBCoaching Points:Rb does not move until LB moves.Focus is on keeping good low hips for tackling and shooting the arms around the defender. There is only 1 hole where the LB should be driving their feet & it is the last hole. Slide14

SHED TACKLE

SHED TACKLEPartner up and get into a good fit position.

On whistle blocker will try to hold the block on the LB. The LB will extend and rip shedding the block.

The Ball Carrier will be coming at an angle where a good angle tackle will take place.

Make sure the Ball Carrier does not move until the block is shed.

14

COACHING POINTS:

The fit is in a good football / LB position with the LB having inside hand placement.

Focus on the extension of arms, shoulder turn, and arm swing on the block shed. On the tackle focus on the gathering balance near foot / near shoulder, head across, wrapping and squeezing. BCOBLBSlide15

OPEN FIELD TACKLING

OPEN FIELD TACKLINGRB will run inside designated cone.

LB will close the distance as fast as possible targeting with eyes on near hip taking the inside position away from the RB.

Once distance is closed, gather balance by getting hips low in a good tackling position.

Head will cross the body aiming for the opposite arm and football.

Arms and hips will explode upward, wrapping around and grabbing cloth in order to squeeze the RB.

15

COACHING POINTS

Close the distance quickly.Gather balance and don’t get caught in a cross over step.Target near hip by keeping eyes on target. Get head across and explode with hips and arms squeezing the ball carrier.Roll Tackle can be done off this drill. Slide16

STANCE & STARTS

STANCE & STARTSLB’s will line up by positions in single file lines giving themselves 3 yds

separation between each player.

The coach will give a stance call & all LB’s will get in a proper stance.

Drill begins with designated foot (Right/Left) and 1 step with that foot.

Drill progresses to 3 steps @ a 45 degree angle.

The final stage is for all LB’s to read which way the coach steps and react stepping 3 steps in a good , low LB position.

WHAT IS A PACKER DEFENSIVE END?

A leader on the field, in the hallways and classroom, and in the community.

To be successful in defensive line play means having the ability to control the line of scrimmage and dominate the offensive blocker.

A player that is physically strong but also a technician in the trenches.

A player whose toughness can never be questioned because he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to get the job done.

A player that has a great motor and plays with great speed and is relentless in his effort to disrupt plays.

A great defensive end can actually change a good offensive game plan by being a threat to both the running and passing games.

A player who takes the small things to heart because he knows it is those small things that make the difference between a defensive stand and a 1

st down. 34Slide35

60Slide61

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

BULL OR POWER RUSH Get in close to OL’s body.

Attack with hands at tips of numbers with a violent karate type blow.

Make OL’s head rock back from blow and get “whistle” against his chest.

Use short choppy steps.

Drive OL on a path straight into QB.

Most effective for inside rushers vs. 3 and 5 step drops

61Slide62

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Turn and RipStarts out same as Bull Rush.

Pull with hand to Gap of responsibility while pushing with hand away.

Now as you pull with Gap hand – Rip through with off hand.

Simultaneously get off hip through by stepping through.

Next step is straight towards QB.

62Slide63

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Turn and Swipe Same as turn and rip except use overhand arm motion instead of underhand rip.

63Slide64

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

SPEED RUSH TECHNIQUESInitial takeoff is critical for outside or gap rushers. The rusher is literally trying to beat the offensive man out of his stance. The offensive man has to be made to fear that he will be beaten by the speed and quickness of the rusher around him on the outside.

64Slide65

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Grab and RubRusher should grab outside arm and shoulder pad of blocker. As rusher grabs pull himself past blocker.

Simultaneously lean into blocker by dipping inside shoulder. ( pressures blocker and straightens course to QB)

Take big step with inside foot and rub inside arm and shoulder past blocker.

Next step is straight to passer.

65Slide66

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Club TechniqueExecuted same as Grab and rub except the rusher clubs the outside shoulder with the arm and hand in an effort to turn the blocker and shorten the path to the QB.

66Slide67

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Club and Swim or Rip Follow the club technique up with a swim or rip move from the inside arm.

67Slide68

PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE

Countermoves Once the blocker begins overcompensating for the outside rush the counter to the inside may be used.

Get to the tip of the outside shoulder of the blocker before making an inside move.

After forcing the blocker to turn or cross his feet over - grab or club blocker’s inside shoulder with your inside arm.

Rub, rip or swipe with outside arm while simultaneously taking a big stride up field with outside foot moving past the blocker.

1.WHAT IS A PACKER CORNER?

A Packer corner is a leader on and off the field.

Someone who is greedy when the ball is in the air.

Someone who is not afraid to sell out every play.

Someone who is not afraid to play man-to-man coverage and well as drop into a zone

Someone who is an aggressive tackler on both the run and the pass.

Someone who knows and understands situations throughout a game. (down and distance, receiver formation leverage, etc…)

110Slide111

2. CORNER GOALS

Be aggressive to the ball

No loafs

No big plays

Win the ball in the air

Take advantage of the ability to change momentum in a game.

111Slide112

3. Cornerback Terminology

In phase- Having control of the route and have “cut the rope”. In Man-to-Man coverage this is the time to take a look at the quarterback

Cut the rope-Corners should pretend that a rope is pulling the receiver from the receivers chest to the goal line. Objective for Corners is to “cut the rope” with his hand going across the chest of the receiver

Rear View-When in deep zone coverage, corners should drop over the top of the widest receiver and continue to stay over the top keeping this receiver in his rear view

Third Eye-When cutting the rope corners should use their hand as a 3

rd

eye to be able to see the receiver without looking at them

Double Move

Defender and WR will start on the same line facing each other with 5 yards distance between. The first whistle will start the defender into a back pedal

The defender will then back pedal around a cone 5 yards behind him.

After he reaches the cone the defender will then plant and drive forward toward the receiver. (T-Step)

Once the defender gets within 3 yards of the WR the coach blows a second whistle to start him down field.

Defender will then have to forward plant open up and work his way to back to being in phase with the receiver

A ball will then be thrown down field for the defender to make a play

Coaching Points:

Corner should not round his t-stepAfter receiver releases down field corner should focus on using hands to slow initial momentum of receiver and gain leverage over the top. When ball is thrown defender should go up and catch the ball at it’s highest point127WRCBack PedalSprintForward plant and engageWork to get in phase with the receiverSlide128

Feel the Pressure

A WR and C should line up shoulder to shoulder facing opposite directions. On the whistle the receiver will run a fade while the corner has to flip his hips and get in phase with the receiver.

The quarterback will then throw a ball which the defender will have to make a play.

Coaching points:

Corners will have to use hands in order to stay over the top.

Corners should not look back at the QB until he is in phase and has “cut the rope” of the receiver.

Corners should catch the ball at it’s highest point.

WHAT IS A PACKER SAFETY?

Intelligence-

Packer

DBs have to be able to think about game situations, the coverage, the formation, and be able to fit into the system.

Accountability

- Play for the guy beside you. This is not a blame game. Own your mistakes and make sure they do not happen again.

Servant Leadership

- TEAM before ME. Give credit to others. Put what is best for the TEAM ahead of what is best for YOU.

Great Effort- Maximum output all the time. Never coast. We must be full speed all the time. We will not tolerate lazy or half speed. Athletic Ability- Best athletes on the field. Must have great speed and agility. Packer DBs will make plays on the football. Strive for Excellence- Never settle for being average or “good enough”. Good is the enemy of great. Being average is like the plague. Avoid it at all costs. Sell out to being GREAT.Confident- Walk on the field with a chip on your shoulder. You own your portion of the coverage. WANT them to throw the ball at you. Short Memory- Mistakes will happen. Learn from it and move on. Do NOT let 1 bad play become several bad plays. Toughness (Physical, Mental, Competitive) Physical- Tackle and be physical in coverage. Physically dominate the opponent. Mental- Short memory. Competitive- Be GREAT in big moments. You earned the right to play in big games. SHOW why you have earned it. Fear cannot be a factor. 133Slide134

SAFETIES TECHNIQUE – Stance & First Step

A. StanceStaggered stance, with your inside foot in front.

Feet are parallel, shoulder width apart with a bend at the hips.

Most important thing to remember is to always have a good base, shoulders over your toes. The stance may vary slightly according to position or ability.

B. Start

1. Start begins with a good stance

2. For safeties, we will take 1 read step and a bounce.

3. Allow shoulders to gradually come up, and stay in front of hips. When leaving your stance, do not lean backwards.

SECTION 2: TACKLING DRILLS

139Slide140

Tackling in the Secondary

There are 4 main parts of a “textbook” tackle 1. Hands:

Your hands should remain at your side in the moments leading up to the tackle

so that you can explode them upward at the moment of impact. You should imagine that

your hands are like guns in the holsters, and at the moment of impact, you are pulling

your pistols. Throw your hands under the respective armpits of the ball-carrier and

squeeze your chest as if you were doing a shoulder fly lift.

 2. Knees: Starting from a balanced stance, you should drive your knees upward and intoyour opponent as you tackle. Your knees should continue to drive as you make impactand not stop throughout the tackle. This will help you to “run through” the ball-carrier.  3. Hips: Your hips are the most important part of the tackle. Good hip movement comesfrom first having a proper stance and body position prior to the tackle. We help maintaingood body position by utilizing the “shuffle” technique right before impact, which getsyour center of gravity low enough to use all of your leg power when you explode into theball carrier.  4. Eyes: Your eyes are important for two reasons. The first is obvious, to see what youare hitting. Remember to keep your head up. Never use your helmet to tackle. Insteadwe teach that you use your eyes to tackle the ball carrier. When you are ready toexplode into the tackle, throw your “eyes to the sky” and this will help guide themomentum of your hips and arms at the proper angle to drive your whole body throughthe ball carrier and force your momentum onto his.140Slide141
