The Progressive Era

By Ashley GranadosSlide2

What was the Progressive Era?

The Progressive Era was a period of time when people were trying to make serious improvements in American society. Many of these progressives tried to improve areas like government and politics, poverty, women's suffrage, alcohol abuse, and child labor. Many of these issued arose with the sudden growth of industry. Photographs were extremely important in the progressive movement. They allowed people, often the wealthy, see what it was like for some of these people.Slide3

Women's Suffrage

In this photo, there are several women, who I assume are protesting. They are carrying flags and banners that read votes for women.  Woman suffrage movement was enacted because many women wanted the right to vote. They felt that they should be equal to men. I also believe they are at a parade and not some random protest because there

are several people lined up along the side of the road. This picture was entitled as Youngest

Parader

in New York suffragist parade. Perhaps she brought her baby along as a sign that the future generation should have equality.Slide4

Corporations and Labor

During this time, many children had to work to provide money for their families or to survive, as some were orphans. This young boy, or a

N

ewsie is selling papers on the street. He likely comes from a poor family or is an immigrant. I imagine that this job could be potentially dangerous if he were to run out into the street. This job

c

ould either be successful or not. If he does not sell, he will not make any money. On the bright side, he is selling papers, something progressives use to attract people and stay informed.Slide5

Urbanization and Immigration

Immigrants were too poor when they came to America. They had to live in poor living conditions where they would all be crammed together. This living condition cost 5 cents for residents to live in.  Unfortunately for many, this is all they could afford. Conditions such as these were what progressives hoped to change.Slide6

Corporations and Labor

In this photo, meat is being prepared for inspection. Meat inspection was something journalists and other progressives hoped would change. Before regulations, meat companies had extremely unsterile conditions. There were several things that had been put in meat that were unsafe such as borax, rats, and unclean water. Once these conditions were exposed by writers, people demanded change. Slide7

Corporations and Labor

I can conclude that the people in this picture are poor or immigrants who are working from home. Although it appears like they are eating at the table, the whole family is working on something so that they can all get paid. This is because the woman is looking intently at her hands and so are the other children

with the exception of the one on the right and the baby. These people needed the whole family to contribute to the large workload.Slide8
