Chinese IA high school Lesson 3 9 v ideo comprehension review C ulture Lesson: Food Differences Script When we talk about Chinese food, you may think about some popular foods in America like orange chicken, General Tso chicken , and fortune cookies , but if you go to China, you may have a hard time finding these foods because they are Americanized versions of Chinese food. There are eight types of food in China, each with distinctive tastes, according to the regional customs. Nearly all of Chinese food is lightly fried combinations of meat and vegetables with rice , noodles, dumplings or savory pancakes as their staple. Regional cuisine may use local vegetables and fish depending on their climate. Southern China, like the province of Sichuan, eats spicier food , while northern cuisine is typically saltier . Along the Southern coast provinces , such as Guangdong, Fujian, and Zhejiang, vegetable and meat dishes are usually sweeter than in other areas. It is this type of food that has taken root in North America , although what the Chinese consider to be sweet may not have the same meani ng for an American. For instance, Chinese like to use sweet red bean paste as the filling for pastries, which many American s find strange. Another strange Chinese food is the moon cake. Moon cakes use the yolk of a preserved salty duck egg as a filling, which Americans find hard to enjoy. Despite the flavor differences, Chinese food is still a good option in North America. There are some traditional Chinese foods that are welcomed by Americans, such as Chinese dumplings, pot s tickers, Kung Pao chicken, Muxu meat, and Chinese Hefen (rice noodles). Next time you go to a China town, you can have an adventure in a Chinese restaurant. You will have a lot fun trying all the new and different flavors. Q1 General Tso chicken and fortune cookie are not traditional Chinese food. Q2 Chinese moon cake has the filling of preserved salty duck egg. Q3 Southern China eats spicy food and northern China likes salty food.
