Opening sentence M: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: C: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (2 Cor 5:17 NRSV)12

PREPARATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen13

Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn : Jesus, lead Thou onLH 341 CAL 293Jesu, geh voran Cento from Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) Tr. Jane Borthwick (1846) rev. David Schubert ( 1989)

Jesus, lead Thou on 1. Jesus, lead us on, till our rest is won; even when the way is cheerless, let us follow, calm and fearless; guide us by your hand to our Father's land.

Jesus, lead Thou on 2 . When dark clouds appear, when no help seems near, let our fears not overtake us, let not faith and hope forsake us; Jesus, lead us through, to our home with you.

Jesus, lead Thou on 3 . When we seek relief from a long-felt grief, when temptations come alluring, make us patient and enduring; show us that bright shore where we weep no more.

Jesus, lead Thou on 4 . Jesus, still lead on, till our rest is won; heavenly leader, still direct us, give us comfort, and protect us, till we safely stand in our Father's land . †

19 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ, as St Paul writes, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God!

20 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Therefore, let us confess our sins to God our Father, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

21 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

22 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

23 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

24 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins?C: I do.

25 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? C: I do.

26 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God's presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy? C: I do.

27 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.C: Amen.

28 LORD, HAVE MERCY M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C:♫ Lord, have me-r-cy. M: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C: ♫ L-o-rd, have me-r-cy.

29 LORD, HAVE MERCY M: For the peace of the whole world, for the wellbeing of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. C: ♫ L-o-r-d, ha- ve mer -cy. M: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. C: ♫ L-o-rd, have me-r-cy.

31 Liturgy of the  WORD 

32 GREETING M: The Lord be with you C: ♫ A-nd also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for faith in Jesus our Saviour. C: Loving Father, when we were captive in the darkness of sin and death, your Son rescued us and brought us back to you. Teach us to trust in him and to live as your people.

PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING Joshua 5:9-12 CEVThe passover at Gilgal, in the promised land. R: The first reading for the fourth Sunday in Lent is written in chapter 5 of Joshua, beginning at verse 9.

Joshua 5:9-12 9 The LORD told Joshua, "It was a disgrace for my people to be slaves in Egypt, but now I have taken away that disgrace." So the Israelites named the place Gilgal, and it still has that name.

Joshua 5:9-12 10 Israel continued to camp at Gilgal in the desert near Jericho, and on the fourteenth day of the same month, they celebrated Passover.

Joshua 5:9-12 11-12 The next day, God stopped sending the Israelites manna to eat each morning, and they started eating food grown in the land of Canaan. They ate roasted grain and thin bread made of the barley they had gathered from nearby fields.  This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 32 CEV   R: The Psalm is Psalm 32R: 1Our God, you bless everyone whose sins you forgive and wipe away. C:2You bless them by saying, "You told me your sins, without trying to hide them, and now I forgive you.”

Psalm 32 CEV   R: 3Before I confessed my sins, my bones felt limp, and I groaned all day long. C: 4Night and day your hand weighed heavily on me, and my strength was gone as in the summer heat.

Psalm 32 CEV   R: 5So I confessed my sins and told them all to you. I said, "I'll tell the LORD each one of my sins.“ Then you forgave me and took away my guilt.C: 6We worship you, LORD, and we should always pray whenever we find out that we have sinned. Then we won't be swept away by a raging flood.

Psalm 32 CEV   R: 7You are my hiding place! You protect me from trouble, and you put songs in my heart because you have saved me.C: 8You said to me, "I will point out the road that you should follow. I will be your teacher and watch over you.

Psalm 32 CEV   R: 9Don't be stupid like horses and mules that must be led with ropes to make them obey." C: 10All kinds of troubles will strike the wicked, but your kindness shields those who trust you, LORD.

Psalm 32 CEV   R: 11And so your good people should celebrate and shout.C: Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy SpiritAs it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 CEVIn Christ the new has comeR: The second reading is written in chapter 5 of 2nd Corinthians, beginning at verse 16.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 16 We are careful not to judge people by what they seem to be, though we once judged Christ in that way. 17Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 18 God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us, and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others. 19What we mean is that God was in Christ, offering peace and forgiveness to the people of this world.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 And he has given us the work of sharing his message about peace. 20We were sent to speak for Christ, and God is begging you to listen to our message. We speak for Christ and sincerely ask you to make peace with God.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 21 Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God.This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

gospel Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 CEV The parable of the lost son M: The holy gospel is written in chapter 15 of the Gospel according to St Luke, beginning at verse 1.C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 M: Tax collectors and sinners were all crowding around to listen to Jesus. 2 So the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses started grumbling, "This man is friendly with sinners. He even eats with them.”

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 3 Then Jesus told them this story: Once a man had two sons. 12The younger son said to his father, "Give me my share of the property." So the father divided his property between his two sons.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 13 Not long after that, the younger son packed up everything he owned and left for a foreign country, where he wasted all his money in wild living. 14He had spent everything, when a bad famine spread through that whole land. Soon he had nothing to eat.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 15 He went to work for a man in that country, and the man sent him out to take care of his pigs. 16He would have been glad to eat what the pigs were eating, but no one gave him a thing. 17Finally, he came to his senses and said, "My father's workers have plenty to eat, and here I am, starving to death!

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 18 I will go to my father and say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against God in heaven and against you. 19I am no longer good enough to be called your son. Treat me like one of your workers.' " 20The younger son got up and started back to his father.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt sorry for him. He ran to his son and hugged and kissed him. 21The son said, "Father, I have sinned against God in heaven and against you. I am no longer good enough to be called your son.”

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 22 But his father said to the servants, "Hurry and bring the best clothes and put them on him. Give him a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. 23Get the best calf and prepare it, so we can eat and celebrate. 24This son of mine was dead, but has now come back to life. He was lost and has now been found.”

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 And they began to celebrate. 25The older son had been out in the field. But when he came near the house, he heard the music and dancing. 26So he called one of the servants over and asked, "What's going on here?”

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 27 The servant answered, "Your brother has come home safe and sound, and your father ordered us to kill the best calf." 28The older brother got so angry that he would not even go into the house.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 His father came out and begged him to go in. 29But he said to his father, "For years I have worked for you like a slave and have always obeyed you. But you have never even given me a little goat, so that I could give a dinner for my friends.

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 30 This other son of yours wasted your money on prostitutes. And now that he has come home, you ordered the best calf to be killed for a feast.”

Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 31 His father replied, "My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32But we should be glad and celebrate! Your brother was dead, but he is now alive. He was lost and has now been found."This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: ♫ Praise to you, O Christ.

Prayer after the gospel M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving and accepting us sinners. Help us to trust and serve you.C: Amen.

64 C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.NICENE CREED

65 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. NICENE CREED

66 For us* and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.* This means: us human beings NICENE CREED

67 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. NICENE CREED

68 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. NICENE CREED

69 We believe in one holy christian † and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.† or original 'catholic ' here means 'universal' NICENE CREED
