Definition
- Bobsleigh or bobsled, is a winter sport in which teams of two or four make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sled
. It was first played in the 1870’s. Also known as King’s ClassSlide3
Rules of Bobsled
Most tracks range between 1,300 and 1,500 meters, making them just under a mile in length
.
Two-man vessels cannot exceed
2.7 meters in length and 860 pounds
(750 pounds for women's two-person bobsleds), including the weight of crew. Four-man sleds have a maximum size
of
3.8 meters and 1,389 pounds
.
Since variation in construction greatly affects quickness, runners must be made of a single piece of solid homogeneous steel and length and width must meet standardized requirements. They cannot be warmed before use, as temperature can provide an edge since friction affects speed.Slide4

During the first 50 meters of the run, the crew then pushes the sleigh along a relatively flat part of the course before jumping into the vessel
.
Only one bobsled can be on the course at the same time, so timing ultimately determines an event's winner. Scoring is kept electronically and measured to the hundreds of a second. The clock stops when the nose of the sleigh crosses the finish line.Slide5
Equipment
- Since the push at the start of a run is so critical to picking up speed, participants wear spiked shoes to dig into the ice for maximum traction. Spikes can be no longer than 4mm. Athletes additionally wear wind-resistant spandex outfits, helmets,
goggles, gloves, and the sled.Slide6
