Irony:

A discrepancy between what you expect to happen and what actually happensSlide9

Verbal Irony: When you say something, but mean the complete opposite

“This locker room smells like roses!”

(The locker actually smells very badly).

“That’s the nicest car I’ve ever seen!”

(The car is an old hunk of junk)

“It must be my lucky day!”

(Everything just keeps going wrong)

Can anyone give another example of verbal irony?Slide10

Situational Irony: Actions taken have an effect exactly opposite than what was intended

In the movie clip, Mr. Bean needs to change into his swimming trunks, but there is no where to change, and there is a man sitting a few feet away from him. Mr. Bean goes to great lengths to get his swimming trunks on without exposing himself in public and is very proud of himself. Then, the stranger gets out of his chair and we see that his in blind and walking with a stick. The IRONY is that the stranger would not have even seen Mr. Bean getting changed, so Mr. Bean had gone to all of the trouble for nothing!

Can anyone else give an example of situational irony? Slide11

Dramatic Irony: Occurs when the audience is aware of important facts and what will happen next, while the characters themselves are completely unaware.

In Romeo and Juliet, one of the most romantic and tragic plays, the basic plot itself is fraught with dramatic irony. The reader is aware that both Romeo and Juliet belong to rival families, but the characters are not aware of this fact. In the climax, Romeo mistakes the unconscious Juliet to be dead, and kills himself by consuming poison. Meanwhile, Juliet wakes up, and asks Friar Lawrence of Romeo's whereabouts. Lawrence feigns unawareness, when actually he has seen Romeo kill himself

Can you find other examples of dramatic irony?
