Ocular Lens (eyepiece)

Body Tube

Supports upper parts of microscope (Always carry with one hand on arm and one hand on base!)

Supports the microscope

If plugged in to power source, this switch will turn light source on

Provides light, making your specimen easier to see

The lens you look through, 10x magnification (enlarges the image of your specimen 10 times its actual size)

Connects the ocular lens to the objective lensesSlide3

Stage

Coarse Adjustment Knob

Lowest power objective lens, magnifies your specimen 4 times its actual size (When observing a specimen, always focus your image using the 4x objective FIRST!)

Magnifies your specimen 10 times its actual size

Magnifies your specimen 40 times its actual size

Highest power objective lens, magnifies your specimen 100 times its actual size

Holds objective lenses and rotates to allow you to change your objective lensWhere slide is placed

(Always make sure the stage is set to its lowest point when you begin to use a microscope)

Focuses the image of your specimen by moving the stage up and down

(Never use this knob when your objective lens is set to 40x or 100x. This could cause you to crack the slide) Slide4

15Fine Adjustment KnobDiaphragm Also focuses the image of your specimen, but used when your objective lens is set to 40x or 100x. This knob moves the stage up and down much slower than the coarse. Allows light from the light source through to your specimen.Slide5

Preparing a

Wet MountSlide6

Preparing a

Wet-MountLocate and cut out the letter “d” from a magazine (small print & lower-case).Using forceps, place the “d” in the center of a slide.Add one drop of water from a dropper, covering the paper completely.Carefully place one edge of a cover slip to the side of the water drop and lower it onto the “d” at an angle.Let any air bubbles escape. Be sure there is no excess water left on the top of the cover slip.
