Bible Study 7:00 Magniloquent One of my past bulletin articles was based on the word of the day on thesaurus.com. I had it in mind to write on a particular topicL but seeing today’s word I felt compelled to mention this for the readers of our bulletin. The word of the day is magniloquentL meaning “speaking or expressed in a lofty or grandiose style” ( http:// www.thesaurus.com/ ). I was with Dr. A.T. Pate in Nashville on Monday recording a couple of radio sermons. As we were on the way to the radio station on Music Row, he was reminiscing about one of the former preach- ers at West 7 th named Leon Burns, whom he said was close to being an orator. There is some value in being an excellent speaker, but we know this is not of the utmost importance. The Apostle Paul in speaking to the church at Corinth said: And when I came I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testi- mony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. And my message and my preach- ing were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God (1 Cor. 2:1 - 5). I am glad one of the greatest preachers of the Gospel was not an orator. While I may feel that I have some traits that might make me an effective preacher, identification as an orator is not one of them. I have heard my Uncle Stan refer to himself as a Moses before, from the standpoint of not having the greatest speaking voice. Every Gospel preacher has his own style, voice, mannerisms and characteristics that he uses to deliver and pro- Sunday Sermon Preview A.M. The Lord’s Side P.M. I can assure you the elders at North View did not hire me because of my professional oratory abilities. Sometimes congregations can get too hung up on trying to hire a preacher who is a polished punctuator. I hope we can all realize that those of us who are preachers are able to proclaim the perfect message through the means of imperfect communicators. I am reminded of this often if I go back and listen to myself. I am not a magniloquent speaker, but I do strive to preach the Word (2 Tim. 4:2). Thank you for allowing me to do so here at North View! Brotherly, Jeremy T. Butt Fabulous 50’s Show There will be a group traveling to Fayetteville for the Fabulous Fifties Show. Susan Gobell has reserved forty tickets; first come, first serve.
