What Have They Seen In Your House?Slide2

What Have They Seen In Your House?

This was a question posed to King Hezekiah by one of the greatest prophets to ever live, Isaiah

Hezekiah was one of the best kings Judah ever had.

He had become very sick

So sick that God sent Isaiah to Hezekiah to tell him to get his house in order because he was going to die.Slide3

What Have They Seen In Your House? After hearing the news that he was about to die, Hezekiah prayed to God.Because of this prayer God healed him from his sickness and added 15 years to his life.

After he was healed he had a visit from some very important men.

They were representatives of the King of Babylon.Slide4

What Have They Seen In Your House?Isa 39:1 ¶ At that time Merodach-Baladan

the son of

Baladan

, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered.

2 And Hezekiah was pleased with them, and showed them the house of his treasures-the silver and gold, the spices and precious ointment, and all his armory-all that was found among his treasures. There was nothing in his house or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them.Slide5

What Have They Seen In Your House? 3 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah, and said to him, "What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?" So Hezekiah said, "They came to me from a far country, from Babylon."

4 And he said, "What have they seen in your house?" So Hezekiah answered, "They have seen all that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them."Slide6

What Have They Seen In Your House?Isaiah wants to know what these men said and where they had come from.We can see a glimpse of pride in the answer Hezekiah gives.

"They came to me from a far country, from Babylon.“

In other words I am so important these men traveled a great distance to see me.Slide7

What Have They Seen In Your House? Then Isaiah asks the question we have based our lesson on."What have they seen in your house?“

Hezekiah had made mistake by showing off all of his valuables to them.

This same mistake is made by many people today.

A large portions of break-ins are committed by people who have already been in the house.Slide8

What Have They Seen In Your House?Let’s go back to Isaiah and see how this works out for Hezekiah.Isa 39:5 ¶ Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD of hosts:

6 'Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says the LORD.Slide9

What Have They Seen In Your House?Isa 39:7 'And they shall take away some of your sons who will descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.'"

8 So Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD which you have spoken is good!" For he said, "At least there will be peace and truth in my days.“

This prophecy was fulfilled about 150 years later.Slide10

What Have They Seen In Your House?Hezekiah certainly showed to much of what was in his house. The question Isaiah asked Hezekiah made me wonder “What have people seen in our house?”

I am not wondering if they have seen our:

Television

China

Some collection we may haveSlide11

What Have They Seen In Your House?I am wondering what they have seen that pertains to our spiritual life.Have they seen things in our house that should not be found in the house of a Christian?

Have they seen things in our house that should be found in a Christian home?

We want to spend the next little while looking things that should and shouldn’t be found in a Christian home.Slide12

What Have They Seen In Your House?

A Family That Prays?Slide13

What Have They Seen In Your House? We are not supposed to do our good deeds in order to be seen of menMt 6:5 ¶ "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

However, there are times when others will see us obeying God.Slide14

What Have They Seen In Your House? If we pray like we should then others will see us engaged in this good work.Do we make a habit out of giving thanks for our food in our home even when we have company?

This is something Jesus made a habit out of.

He said a “blessing” or “Gave thanks” when he fed the 5000 and the 4000.Slide15

What Have They Seen In Your House?Mt 15:36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.Slide16

What Have They Seen In Your House? He also said the “blessing” when he instituted the Lord’s Supper.Mr

14:22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.Slide17

What Have They Seen In Your House?Do we follow the command of the Apostle Paul and make prayer a regular part of our life?1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

If we are praying like we should then others will see it in our house!Slide18

What Have They Seen In Your House?

People Using Filthy Language?Slide19

What Have They Seen In Your House? What kind of impression are we making on others with the language we use?Do they hear us use profanity?

Do we permit others to use this type language in our home on a regular basis?

This type language should not be found in a Christian home.Slide20

What Have They Seen In Your House?Col 3:8 ¶ But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

Eph

4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.Slide21

What Have They Seen In Your House?Jesus tells us one of the things we will be judged on is our language.Mt 12:37 "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.“

This type language simply will not be a part of a Christian home.Slide22

What Have They Seen In Your House?

A Family That Fears God?Slide23

What Have They Seen In Your House? Is the fear of God something that will be seen by others in your house? The fear of God means we hold God in the proper attitude of respect and awe.

We recognize His right to demand obedience from us.

Several times in the scriptures the “fear of God” is coupled with obedience.Slide24

What Have They Seen In Your House?God told the Israelites several times to fear Him and keep His commandmentsDe 13:4 "You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.

Peter tells Christians that we need to fear God.

1Pe 2:17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.Slide25

What Have They Seen In Your House? Our fear of God will be manifested by our obedience to His commands. Will others see a family who makes obedience to God a priority in their house?

Mt 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Or will they see a family who obeys God when it doesn’t get in the way of what we want to do?Slide26

What Have They Seen In Your House? Will they see a family that understands man’s purpose in this life?Ec

12:13 ¶ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.Slide27

What Have They Seen In Your House?

Alcohol or Other Drugs?Slide28

What Have They Seen In Your House? When visitors come into our home will they see a family who uses alcohol?Would they find a 6 pack of beer or a bottle of wine in our refrigerator?

The word “sober” is used 12 times in the New Testament

6 of these times it is translated from the Greek word “

Nepho

” which means to abstain from wineSlide29

What Have They Seen In Your House? When we abstain from something then we stay away from it, don’t use it at all!Webster’s defines abstain as: ”to choose not to do or have something”

Will others see a family that is being sober?

1Th 5:6 ¶ Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.Slide30

What Have They Seen In Your House?1Pe 5:8 ¶ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

The dangers of alcohol and other drugs are clearly seen in the society in which we live.

They prevent us from thinking clearly and making good decisions.

How many deaths could be prevented if people would just abstain from these thingsSlide31

What Have They Seen In Your House? In addition to the deaths we see, there are scores of families that are destroyed because a husband or a wife is addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

The emotional damage done to children in these situations is immeasurable.

We need to make sure these are things that are not seen in our house!Slide32

What Have They Seen In Your House?

Love?

Love for GodSlide33

What Have They Seen In Your House? Can others see a love for God in our house? This is not shown by some sign we hang up or by some post we may put on

facebook

.

A love for God is demonstrated by the way we live our lives.

By obedience

1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.Slide34

What Have They Seen In Your House?Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.

That’s pretty easy to understand isn’t it?Slide35

What Have They Seen In Your House? If I love Jesus, as so many claim to do, then I will keep His word. I will obey Him!If I don’t obey Him then I don’t love Him!

Do others see a family in our house striving to obey God because we love Him?

Or do we just say that we love Him?

1Jo 2:3 ¶ Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.Slide36

What Have They Seen In Your House?1Jo 2:4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.Slide37

What Have They Seen In Your House?Do we follow the example of Christ in the way we obey God?The love of God and obedience to God cannot be separated.

Joh 14:15 ¶ "If you love Me, keep My commandments.

The love of God will be seen by obedience in a Christian home!Slide38

What Have They Seen In Your House?

Love?

Husband and WifeSlide39

What Have They Seen In Your House?Do others see love in our home in the husband and wife relationship?God has set up His plan for the family.

Eph

5:22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.Slide40

What Have They Seen In Your House?Eph 5:24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,Slide41

What Have They Seen In Your House?Eph 5:27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.

29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.Slide42

What Have They Seen In Your House?Skip down to vs 33Eph

5:33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

We see the husband is to be the head of the household.

The wife should respect his authority in that role

The husband should love his wife enough to be willing to die for herSlide43

What Have They Seen In Your House? Not only should the husband love his wife, the wife should love her husband.Tit 2:4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

We saw that the love of God means obedience to His commands but what does it mean to love each other?

Paul gives a wonderful description of love in 1 Corinthians 13Slide44

What Have They Seen In Your House?1Co 13:4 ¶ Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Slide45

What Have They Seen In Your House?Would those who come into our home see a loving relationship between the husband and wife?Would they see a husband and wife demonstrating these characteristics towards each other?

Kind, Patient, not rude, looking out for each others best interest, not quick to anger, ready to believe the best instead of the worst.Slide46

What Have They Seen In Your House?

Love?

Our ChildrenSlide47

What Have They Seen In Your House?Would others see love for our children demonstrated in our home?Remember that love doesn’t seek its own?

It is looking out for the best interest of the ones we love.

Are we looking out for the best interest of our children?

Or are we just trying to be their friend and not have any problems?Slide48

What Have They Seen In Your House? If we love our children we will discipline them!Pr

13:24 ¶ He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

Discipline is necessary to train a child how to behave.

Pr

29:15 ¶ The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

Pr

22:15 ¶ Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.Slide49

What Have They Seen In Your House? Not only are we to discipline our children, if we love them we will teach them about God.

Eph

6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

If we love them we will teach them more than just reading, writing and arithmetic.

We will teach them things that can save their soulSlide50

What Have They Seen In Your House? This teaching should begin while they are young.Pr

22:6 ¶ Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

One of the most effective ways for us to teach them is by our example.

If we don’t want our children to drink, smoke and cuss then we don’t need to drink, smoke an cuss.Slide51

What Have They Seen In Your House? If we want our children to pray, attend worship and study their Bibles then we need to pray, attend worship and study our Bibles with them!

Do others see a love for our children in our home?

Do they see us disciplining them, teaching them about God and living a good example in front of them?

These things will be seen in a Christian home!Slide52

Conclusion

We need to be good influences on others.

When they see us doing something wrong then they may believe it ok for them to participate in it as well.

Instead of being influences for evil we must be an influence for good.

How will what is seen in our house influence others?
