One plot from the NSW TDR is to be presented as part of the ATLAS presentation at the LHCC open meeting. The figure in the TDR won’t be officially approved until the CB approves the TDR.

Since the LHCC open meeting is the week before the CB, approval of this plot is being requested now.Slide3

Explanation

A

Z’ sample has been produced with both

muons

going in the forward region namely 1.1<|

|

2.9 (generator level cuts). A further cut selecting both

muons

going into the MDT region has been applied |

<2.

The background conditions expected at 0.2x10

34

, 3x10

34

and 5x10

34

have been obtained by adding to the Z’ sample, data taken at 0.26x 10

34

with a minimum bias trigger and overlaying in the

muon

spectrometer 10 events to obtain an equivalent luminosity of about 3x10

34

and overlaying 20 events to obtain an equivalent luminosity of about 5x10

34

. The uncertainty we estimate on the equivalent luminosity is about 50%.

The events in the three samples are selected using the standard Z’ analysis cut flow, which requires the presence of three

muon

stations on the track to ensure good momentum resolution at high

momenta

Slide4

Z’ reconstruction at different luminosities

The plot shows the mass distribution for reconstructed Z’ in samples obtained overlaying 1(black

histo

) , 10 (blue

histo

) or 20(red

histo) minimum bias events taken at 2.4x10^33. The equivalent luminosity for the different sample is 2.6x10^33 overlay 1About 3x10^34 overlay 10 About 5 x10^34 overlay 20Each distribution is scaled to the total number of events in the specific sample and the relative difference is due to a reduction in the selection efficiency. The events are selected if both muons are reconstructed
