This is a Worldwide EpidemicWorldwide –Problems in both industrialized and rapidly developing areas including Asia!USA – Now, about 2 out of 3 adults are overweightSlide10

Myths & Half-TruthsWeight-Loss Diets Cannot Work. Myth!Tell that to those who have lost extraordinary amounts of weight that they had been carrying around for years, despite their many unsuccessful weight-loss attempts in the past. Many went on to have a lifestyle change. As they became aware of what had caused past diet failures, attitudes about themselves changed. A diet that works not only helps people lose weight and regain their health but helps them to develop more positive feelings about themselves. Successful dieting may provide confidence to succeed in other aspects of life. Slide13

Myths & Half-TruthsDiabetics always gets worse. Half-truth!Yes, type 2 diabetics often get worse, if their diabetes is poorly controlled. In that case, they may require ever more medication and develop serious complications. However, for many diabetics, major dietary changes can reverse the course of their disease. Better control of their blood sugar levels can prevent further deterioration and sometimes allow healing of organs that were injured by high sugar. When better diabetic control is coupled with weight-loss, this can lead to major health improvements over time.Slide14

Myths & Half-TruthsInherited Metabolism Keeps You Overweight and Causes Diabetes. Half-truth!Yes, genetics plays a role in both overweight and type 2 diabetes, but less than people believe. Two groups that have been most maligned about are Native Americans and Americans of African ancestry. Yet, historically both of these groups were once fit and slim. Genetically, they still carry that heritage to be fit and slim. Economic conditions burdened them with unhealthy diets long before the remainder of our nation became obese. Slide15

Myths & Half-TruthsEating Fat Makes You Fat. Myth!Eating more food than your body needs makes you fat, in whatever form it takes! Your body is programmed to take extra energy and store it for and lean times To store fat, your body needs a signal from insulin. A high sugar level drives that insulin level! In diabetics, medication may worsen your weight problem. The quickest way to get fat is to stuff yourself with any form of carbohydrate that will turn into sugar. Farmers and ranchers know to fatten cattle and poultry by feeding them grain.Slide16

Myths & Half-TruthsAll Natural Foods are Healthy. Half-truth!Yes, real natural foods are usually healthier, but government regulators have responded to the food processing industry and distorted the meaning of the word “natural“ on a food label. Because of this legal mislabeling, you may mistakenly be purchasing artificial “Frankenstein foods” thinking that they are healthy and natural. Instead, these unnatural foods can keep you addicted to overeating. Since not all “natural foods” are equal, you must become aware of foods that are causing diabetes and obesity.Slide17

What has changed in the last 35 years ?A “Perfect Storm” of bad events.Slide18

Government, attempting to do good, actually did harm. Established a national health objective to convince Americans to avoid fat in their diets. This unfounded advice lacked a valid scientific basis! Yet, this bad dietary advice became widely accepted.1 out of 7 Americans were considered overweight* in 1979, when the Government decided to change the way Americans thought about food. * Using the measures that were in use at that time2 out of 3 Americans are overweight today, after the Government’s “success” convincing people to think low-fat means healthy. Two important studies have since proved the government’s diet advice wrong:The Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial andThe Nurses Study

Government attempting to do good actually did harm.Bad dietary advice became widely accepted.Tobacco industry took over food processing. As Americans began to quit smoking, food companies deicide to diversify to offer things that people could not quit.Food was at the top of their list. For three decades, tobacco companies controlled the food processing industry in the United States and a large share of that business in the world.Experts in brain chemistry working for tobacco companies met with food industry chemists.Changes in the last 35 yearsSlide20

Government attempting to do good actually did harm. Bad dietary advice became widely accepted.Tobacco industry took over food processing.Substitution of real ingredients with artificial ones higher in calories, particularly from sugars. Cheaper ingredients at higher prices.Government allowing creative and misleading labeling by food processors. Addition of flavor-enhancing chemicals.Appetite increased due to changes. Portions increased to meet demand.Changes in the last 35 yearsSlide21
