A Reading Genie Book

Slide2On the first day of school, Nate came to Miss Boyd's room to join the band, but the noise was too loud. Miss Boyd was mad. "Boys in the back, if I boil over, you will not get to join the band!”
Slide3When Nate felt in his bag for his flute, Jake’s head poked out, and the girl behind him saw that he was not a toy. "Is that a snake? A snake!" she cried.
Jake slid like oil from the bag. "Oh no," thought Nate. “Miss Boyd will be mad, and I will not get to join the band!”
Slide5Nate ran to get Jake. When he looked down the hall, he saw Jake go into the girls’ room. “Come back, Jake! Boys can’t go in there!”
Slide6Nate knocked. No one made a sound. He tossed a coin—tails. He was scared, but he went in.
“Hey!” yelled a loud voice. No boys allowed!” It was Joy McCoy, and she was mad.
“Please don’t tell,” Nate said. “My snake is in here. If Miss Boyd sees me, it will spoil my chance to join the band.”
Slide8Nate pointed to Jake coiled up high on a foil pipe. Joy said, “You go out. I will get your snake.” She started to scale a stall.
Slide9Nate went out, breathing hard. Soon Joy came out with Jake in her hand. “Got it!’
“Oh, boy, thanks, Joy!” said Nate. “You are super brave!”
Slide10With Jake coiled on his arm, he went back to join the band class. But Miss Boyd was not fooled. She foiled his plan. “What do you have to say?”
Slide11“I’m sorry, Miss Boyd,” said Nate. “I didn’t mean to bring my snake. Jake just sneaks into my bag sometimes. Please let me play my flute in the band.”
Slide12“You take that snake to the lab and leave it in the soil tub until after school,” said Miss Boyd. “Then hurry back to play your flute. We need you in the band.”
Slide13Nate was glad to get a chance to join the band. “Thanks, Miss Boyd. You will enjoy the way I play the flute!”
