Christ had made us kings and

priests

KINGS

refers

to the exalted rank and dignity which we have; to the fact that we, in common with our

Saviour

, will reign triumphant over all enemies, sin and death and hell

.

PRIESTS

refers to the fact that we are engaged in the holy service of God, that we offer to Him acceptable worship

.

Focus today is on PRIESTS and our template is Samuel

Samuel was a man chosen for God, from his miraculous birth until his death.

He is popular for being born to Hannah, a woman formerly known as barren, and for being the one who anointed Saul and David, the first Kings of Israel.

Now there was a certain man of

Samuel was from the tribe of

Levi

Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he

he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

Samuel was given in service to God

And

Elkanah

went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.

Samuel ministered to God

To "minister to the Lord" is to worship him alone in all that you do.

Any ministry that is directed towards others without first being directed towards God is idolatry.

And the Levites that are gone away far from me, when Israel went astray, which went astray away from me after their idols; they shall even bear their iniquity.

But the priests the Levites, the sons of

Zadok

, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood,

Samuel ministered to God

Levites were the priests who were in charge of taking care of the Temple.

One group was

ministering to the temple

- that is, they were upholding religious practices while worshiping idols in their hearts. Even though they made offerings to God, he didn't accept them, because they were being hypocritical by not glorifying God with their whole lives.

The other group was

ministering directly to the Lord

, honoring him as holy and obeying him with their hearts.

In

OT times, priests would make sacrifices on behalf of the people, in a way that was pleasing to God, and offers intercessory prayers to God for them

Samuel ministered to God

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was.

Samuel remained in the presence of God

Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am."

When He heard God’s voice he immediately answered:

“Here I am”…

even though he initially thought it was Eli. He was ready.

Samuel was available

And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

He

ran

to Eli when he heard someone calling him. He didn’t just lie there. He got up and responded.

Samuel was quick to respond

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant

Samuel first listened to Eli’s instruction. In listening to Eli, Samuel was listening to God and heard the warning he wanted Samuel to deliver.

Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

Then

Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

He did not stop seeking the Lord as he matured

Faith in God is not only for children!

And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
