Strategic Context. During the most recent Roman civil war, Constantius encourages Germanic tribes such as the Alamanni to stir up trouble in rival Magnentius’ western half of the empire. When Constantius defeats Magnentius in 351, he is left with the disorder he helped create. In 355, he appoints his cousin, Flavius Claudius Julianus – better known as Julian the Apostate – as Caesar of the Gaul to crush the Alamanni. Julian learns much of his enemy in 356 and takes the offensive the following year. The Roman plan calls for Barbatio to advance from the east and Julian from the south to encircle the growing Alamanni confederation, but an Alamanni surprise attack forces Barbatio to withdraw. Barbatio’s defeat also encourages seven Alamanni kings to mass their forces against Julian, who quickly marches to battle before the confederation can disperses or grow.. . 256 BC. Strategic Context. The First Punic War begins in 264 BC as Carthaginian and Roman armies become involved in a war in Sicily after Mamertines of Messana appeals to both Carthage and Rome for assistance against Hiero II of Syracuse. The Romans largely expel the Carthaginians from Sicily by defeating them at the Siege of Agrigentum in 262 BC. Surprisingly, the inexperienced Roman navy then defeats Carthage at the Battle of Mylae in 260 BC, allowing Rome to invade Corsica and Sardinia, islands north of Sicily. In 256 BC, a Roman fleet under Marcus Atilius Regulus and Lucius Manlius Vulso Longus sails from Sicily to invade North Africa but it is intercepted by a Carthaginian fleet under Hamilcar.. Following the death of Philip V of Macedon in 179 BC, Perseus of Macedon hopes to renew his father’s ambition of conquering Greece. This leads to tensions and eventual war with Pergamum, which is expanding quickly under the leadership of King Eumenes. Rome, more concerned with Macedonian power and its alliances with anti-Roman factions in Thrace, sides with Pergamum, resulting in an indecisive war 171-170 BC. Dissatisfied with this result, the Roman Senate appoints Lucius Aemilius Paullus as commander of the army to properly subdue Macedon. In June 168 BC, Paullus advances, outflanking Macedonian mountain positions, and forcing Perseus to retreat to Pydna. There the two armies encamp for days until a skirmish erupts into a full-scale battle.. Guerrilla War in the South. Chapter 7 Section 3 Pt I. The Battle of Charles Town.
