What Dative Is

Dative is the case of the indirect object. It is usually the person/thing you give or do something to. The man gives the dog the bone =The man gives the bone to the dog.In both cases, “the dog” would be expressed by a dative case in German(Der Mann gibt dem Hund den Knochen). If there is no preposition or other element that mandates the dative, the dative object is usually a person (or animal).

When to Use Dative1. A noun/pronoun is the indirect object in the clause. 2. Dative can be mandated by certain verbs (e.g., danken, glauben, passen) or certain adjectives (e.g., ähnlich, bekannt).3. Dative is always mandated by a dative preposition (cf. dative prepositions)4. Dative may be required by a two-way preposition (an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen).

Forms of the DativeOnly 3 possible article endings:masc. + neut.  - em (dem, einem, meinem)fem.  - er (der, einer, meiner)plur.  - en (den, keinen, meinen)The same endings (-m, -r, -n) are also typical in Dative pronouns:mir (to me), dir (to you), ihr (to her)ihm (to him / to it)ihnen (to them), Ihnen (to You)uns (to us) & euch (to y’all) are identical to accusative. Extrawurst (special treatment)In the plural dative, nouns add an –n (unless they already end in –n). E.g., den Kindern, den Leuten, diesen Personen
