Introduction to Building a Simple Sampler

Objectives Learning Goals Work collaboratively Understand the basics of building using electrical components Build a simple water sampler and program it to win a challenge

What is something in your life you wish you could automate? folding laundry lawn mowing homework ?

Consider the Ocean Chemistry Scientist... A scientist may need many samples of water from somewhere very deep… How would you overcome this challenge? http://utnews.utoledo.edu/index.php/06_06_2016/lake-erie-center-researchers-students-collect-samples-to-analyze-water-quality-during-algal-bloom-season

What did NOAA scientists do? They built a submersible automated water sampler (SAS). Each sampler can collect 2 water samplers The time of sample collection can be programmed to occur whenever the scientist determines In the photo, you can see 4 samplers deployed Benefit is huge!! One scuba dive gets 6 samples compared to 6 separate dives, on 6 different days, where the weather may not always cooperate.

How did they do it? Inspired by the ‘makers movement’ and new technology like 3D printers, the team set out following the Engineering Design Process to make the samplers as affordable and accessible as possible.

What is your challenge today? Build a simple sampler You will be given a sparkfun kit plus some extra components Follow the guide to build the breadboard by inserting the components first, then the electrical wires. You will learn to control SAMPLE DELAY SAMPLE DURATION Last, compete against other teams in the sample challenge!
