Jay Z dropped out of high school, despite showing a great deal of potential, to sell drugs and make money. He even shot his brother in the shoulder once during an argument. After being shot at on a few occasions, and tired of the drug life, Jay Z partnered with the fellow rapper Jaz-O on a single called “The Originators,” which earned him a feature on MTV.

Slide5Why Jay-z got into entrepreneurship
Jay-z grew up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York. At 14 years old he started selling drugs to help him and his family escape poverty. To finally escape all the negativity he was facing in his life, he started to get into rap and at the age of 27 years old Jay-z founded the company Roc-A-Fella Records with two friends, Kareem Burke and Damon Dash in 1996. His album Hard Knock Life brought him recognition and success in life and won him his first ever Grammy Nomination. Jay-z is a speculative entrepreneur because he buys businesses to improve them with the belief that he will sell them in the future.
Slide6One Challenge that Jay-z faced while becoming an Entrepreneur
He kept working with multiple DJ’s to try and get more songs recorded, but was unsuccessful in doing so. Every major record label in the country rejected him. It soon became clear that he would never make a living as a hip-hop performer.
Slide7How he overcame the challenge
Rather that let the bad news get to him, he tried it from another angle. He became a producer and started his own label. It was a difficult task, almost all of their artists left the label before making an album. By 1997 Jay-z managed to release one album, although they were struggling, they persisted.
The following year Jay-z released an album called Vol. 2 and the song “Hard Knock Life.” After that album Roc-A-Fella Records shot up and became very successful and was later sold to Def Jam Records for $10 million. He is now worth over $900 million and is ranked the worlds 6
th
most powerful celebrity.
