DNA barcoding is an important measure for determining variations in mosquitoes of similar phenotypes. DNA Barcoding will be used in addition to traditional taxonomic methods to scientifically identify mosquitoes collected in three different locations on eastern Long Island. Mosquitoes are a problem on Long Island, and the warm humid climate in summer is conducive for them to increase in population size. Mosquitoes pose a threat to the public as a vector for disease. Recently, eight mosquito samples collected in late July throughout Suffolk County have tested positive for West Nile virus. Another local mosquito sample tested positive for a rare and possibly deadly virus called Eastern Equine Encephalitis. While there is a vaccine for horses against the virus, there is no vaccine for humans (Coburn, 2019). . n l y from the bite of mosquitoes (primarily the Culexspecies) infected with the virus. Mosquitoes become infected if they bite a bird thatcarries the virus. Infected mosquitoes then transmit West Nil , & . Aedes. are most common species. Females live 2-4 weeks and begin feeding on blood (to produce up to 1000 eggs) ~2 days after reaching adulthood. Eggs are laid on stagnant water surface during warm seasons and can stay dormant for 10 to 15 years. Vectorborne. Diseases Unit. Last Updated May 2023. What is a . mosquitoborne. disease and . why should you care about it?. People can get a . mosquitoborne. disease when they are bitten by a mosquito that is infected with a disease agent.
