Lakeside Murder

“I need your opinion on the Topping murder,” Sheriff Monahan said to Dr.

Haledjan

.

“Topping was the guest of Arthur Blair,” began the sheriff. “The Blair cottage is about a quarter mile from mine on Serpent Lake. Two nights ago, as I was retiring, I heard a shot from there.

“Hurrying outside, I met Blair running toward me. ‘Come quickly!’ he cried. ‘Fritz Topping’s been shot!’

“As we started for his place, Blair told me, ‘Fritz and I were watching the late news on television when all of a sudden the lights went out. I started to investigate when the front door swung open. A man with a rifle shot Fritz and disappeared before I could recover my wits.

“I saw Fritz had been shot in the heart and I ran directly to fetch you,’ concluded Blair.“The Blair cottage,” the sheriff went on, “was dark. A little moonlight played in the living room where Fritz Topping sat in the chair. I had brought a flashlight and it took but an instant to confirm that he was dead.

“Somebody had pulled the master fuse in the garage. When we replaced it, the kitchen light and a table lamp behind the corpse went on. I could see the body was slightly tilted away from the front door.

“I told Blair to try to recall what he could.

“The cottage was silent for a full minute before Blair shook his head. ‘I-it happened so fast. I’ve told you everything I can remember.’”

“Which,” broke in Haledjian, “should be enough to bring him to trial for murder!”

Why does Haledjian think Blair should be brought in on murder charges?Slide6

Claim:

Haledjian thinks Blair killed

Fritz Topping because the crime scene is wrong.

Evidence

Warrant

Blair stated to the sheriff that “Fritz and I were watching the late news on television when all of a sudden the lights went out.” Then,

later when the master fuse was replaced,

the kitchen light and a table lamp behind the corpse went on and the sheriff asked Blair to tell him what happened again. Then the sheriff stated, “

“The cottage was silent for a full minute before Blair shook his head. ‘I-it happened so fast. I’ve told you everything I can remember.’”

If Blair and Fritz had been watching television when the power went out, then when the power

was restored, the television, like the lights, would have come back on. Instead, there was a “full minute” of silence, so the television was not on when Fritz was killed. Blair is not telling the truth about what happened.Slide7

Types of Bias

Favors one side of the issue more than the other side.

Favors one group or type of people more than another.

Favors one person more than another.

Favors one opinion more than a contrasting opinion.Slide9

Instead of encouraging parents to use moderate spanking, we have "bleeding heart" representatives who want to make it a crime to spank a child in the state of Massachusetts. This ban will fail as is has in California and other states. Over 90% of Americans have been spanked for doing something wrong during their early life and are fully functioning people.Slide10

Despite our squeamishness about cultural stereotypes, there are tons of studies out there showing marked and quantifiable differences between Chinese and Westerners when it comes to parenting. In one study of 50 Western American mothers and 48 Chinese immigrant mothers, almost 70% of the Western mothers said either that "stressing academic success is not good for children" or that "parents need to foster the idea that learning is fun." By contrast, roughly 0% of the Chinese mothers felt the same way. Instead, the vast majority of the Chinese mothers said that they believe their children can be "the best" students, that "academic achievement reflects successful parenting," and that if children did not excel at school then there was "a problem" and parents "were not doing their job." Spanking a child when he does an outrageous act gives him second thoughts before trying it again. The parent should tell the child the reasons for the inappropriateness of his actions and help him generalize why adults frown upon certain behaviors. Even with getting a child's undivided attention, lecturing a young child without giving appropriate consequences is a futile act.Slide26

“My

fellow Americans, we live in a time of great change. Tomorrow marks 13 years since our country was attacked. Next week marks 6 years since our economy suffered its worst setback since the Great Depression. Yet despite these shocks; through the pain we have felt and the grueling work required to bounce back — America is better positioned today to seize the future than any other nation on Earth
