Point of View Review

1 st person Melissa! I haven’t seen you since high school! We used to be such good friends! My mom mentioned you just the other day. Let me give you my phone number! Identify the words that show this is written in the 1 st person.

1 st person First person point of view is told by a character in the story who uses the first-person pronoun “I”. Other pronouns like “me”, “my”, and “mine” also show the first person. Words like “we” and “our” are first person plural.

Quiz time Which passage is written from the first person point of view? A. You should think about different ways you can recycle. For example, you can use the back side of old paper as scratch paper. Keep it by your phone or the door. B. I am so excited about visiting Grandpa and Grandma. I want to get them unique gifts this time. I am thinking about making gifts for them. That way, no one else will have them! C. He was on the sidewalk when he heard the loud noise. He raced around the corner to see what happened. It turned out it was just Chef Marcos, throwing out a bad recipe.D. Mark was not the kind of person who made friends easily. He was very reserved and kept to himself. He only had one close friend, Jimmy, who moved away last year.

2 nd person Jessie! Hang up and clean your room. First, pick up the clothes on the floor. Then, you need to run the vacuum and dust the shelves.

2 nd person Second person uses the pronoun “you”. It is often used when giving instructions or asking for someone’s opinion.

Quiz time   I'm sure that you've heard of the naughty Nguyen sisters. Any sane person would've run for the hills, but I agreed to babysit them last summer because I needed the money for school supplies and clothes.      You would be surprised by the girls' hyperactivity and noisiness. Throughout the summer, the girls ran around, jumped on beds, chased their skittish cat, and screamed at the top of their lungs. To make things worse, they absolutely refused to take naps. Plugging in The Little Mermaid for them to watch was the only way I could get any peace and quiet. However, they loudly sang every song featured in the movie.     When their mother came home in the afternoon, I was immediately out the door. As you probably guessed, I couldn't wait for school to start.     Sometimes, I have nightmares that I'm babysitting them again. If you listen, you can probably hear them shrieking now.Which point of view does the author use to tell the story? A. second person onlyB. third and second personC. first and second person  D. first person only

3 rd person – limited omniscient Marie sat her head resting in her hands. Her misery was obvious for everyone to see.

3 rd person – limited omniscient The author relates the inner thoughts and feelings of only ONE character, and everything is viewed from this character’s perspective.

Quiz time Marie sat on the front steps, her head resting in her hands. She hated school. Why did everyone have to be so mean? She had thought that Claire was her best friend, but not anymore. No friend would ever do what Claire had done. How do you know that this is written from the 3 rd person limited omniscient point of view?

3 rd person - omniscient The narrator knows and tells what each character feels and thinks. The narrator is ALL knowing. OMNI = allSCI = knowing
