Six Step Process for Guided Highlighted Reading Step 1 : Generate Background Knowledge Step 2 : Activate Prior Knowledge – This is done prior to the reading or lesson to be taught in order to activates prior knowledge and set a purpose for the reading.  Anticipation Guides  Discussions  Quick Writes, Journal Entries, think - pair - share, or ticket out the door. Step 3 : Provide or Read Summary to students; goal is to highlight the major points from the selection or event to provide a short summary or give stud ents the “gist” of the selective or event. Step 4 : Analysis of Text (How the text is written) The analysis of the text helps students to recognize the structure or genre of the text. Step 5 : Vocabulary – See six step process for teaching vocabulary by Robert Marzano Step 6 : Guided Highlighted Reading Activity:  Benefits of Guided Highlighted Reading : o Builds reading fluency and stamina needed for the extended reading expectations. o Models for students how to find important elements in the reading select ion. o The repeated process helps students gain an understanding of important ideas found in the reading selection.  Preparation : Point out the numbers next to the paragraphs in the specific reading selection. Have students notice the title and author of t he text. Have students do a scan of the passage.  Directions : With a highlighter, follow the teacher prompts and highlight what the prompts instruct you to highlight.  Process : Teacher states the paragraph in which the highlighting question is being asked . Once the paragraph is stated, the teacher will read the question that the student will highlight as the answer to the question. Once most of the students have highlighted the answer to the question, the teacher will repeat the same process asking anoth er highlighting question. The process continues until all the questions have been asked and the students have highlighted the most important information from the reading selection.  Important Notice : It is important that the teacher moves this process a long quickly, but not beyond the capability of the students. If students seem frustrated slow the process down. As the students become more comfortable with the process, increase the pace of the guided highlighted reading process to help students build th eir reading fluency.
