ANNUAL REPORT

Slide2Dear
Friends,What a year it has been for Cape Abilities! 2018 has been a time of growth and change, and we are also celebrating our past, present, and future as we enter our 50th year of service to individuals with disabilities on Cape Cod.
As always, we have focused first and foremost on those we serve: 420 individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, blindness, Down syndrome, brain injury, hearing impairment, limited mobility, seizure disorder, and mental health issues. We celebrate the
abilities
of every individual we serve, and we take joy from the services and supports we are able to provide through education and counseling, and by offering the residential, social, therapeutic, and employment programs and opportunities that every individual – regardless of ability – needs to live life to the fullest.
The demand for our programs continues to grow, particularly because we have adapted over serve new populations can benefit from our programs. As one example, we are serving a growing number of individuals with autism and spectrum disorders. It is heartwarming to see the opportunities we have discovered on Cape Cod for this segment of Cape Abilities participants. Gratefully,Jonathan SproulPresident & CEOCape Abilites

Cape Abilities’ Social Enterprises
are retail businesses that act as the storefront for the Cape Abilities mission, by creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and welcoming the public in to be part of the mission. We aim to have our social enterprises be the model for training and employing people with disabilities in our region.
A paid internship program was successfully implemented in 2019 for students under the age of 22 with disabilities, at
Cape Abilities Farm Market
in Chatham, and will be expanded to
Cape Abilities Thrift
and
Cape Abilities Farm in 2020. Also in 2020, the Growing Futures training program will launch at the farm; a program partnering with community employers to provide jobs for individuals who complete their year-long training. The goal is to implement the Growing Futures model across all of our businesses, to advance the Cape Abilities mission by creating vibrant, diverse and inclusive employers across Cape Cod.

Department
.
Through this initiative, Cape Abilities will be embarking on a journey to accomplish several tasks including the implementation of a new Electronic Medical Record system and creating a more robust and effective training program for both staff and program participants. The quality and compliance team will also be the point of contact for the various regulatory agencies such as the Department of Developmental Services, and in the coming year the department will be actively working with these agencies on initiatives that will enhance the lives of all
participants. The Quality and Compliance team will continue to carry on the mission of Cape Abilities through assurance that the agency is in compliance with regulatory requirements, while providing the highest level of services and support to staff, participants and families.

Since
1968,
Cape Abilities has
provided enriching, high quality
programs and services
, coupled with diverse community opportunities that empower our participants to achieve meaningful and valued roles in
society.
And
as we head into our next
fifty
years, we
have our sights set on future possibilities that will continue to improve the lives of the individuals we serve. In our Day Habilitation Program, we have just begun a Consumer Council, where our participants speak to the activities that they would like to see in their own program, can voice their concerns, safely share their fears and to proudly be the voice for their peers who may not be able to articulate their feelings. Our hope is that through this council, our participants can strengthen their voice and ability to self-advocate and in doing so, will learn that their opinion and their choices do matter. In our Residential Program, we proudly opened our 15th
participant home. By June, 2020, we expect to open our 16th and 17th home thanks to the dedicated folks at FORWARD at the Rock. These homes will serve as an affordable model housing community for adults on the autism spectrum. We are very excited to manage these homes and to provide quality services to those who live there. Our Adult Family Care/Shared Living/Agency with Choice (AFC/SL/AWC) programs are expanding rapidly with new referrals weekly. It is our pleasure to match our participants with the services that they need and to assist them in navigating the funding and support systems across Massachusetts. In our Community Based Day Supports/Vocational/Pre-Employment Training (CBDS/Voc/PRE-ETS) programs we continue to explore new opportunities for our participants to be involved in their employment and volunteer communities. The list of our Community Partners continues to grow and we are so grateful to all who collaborate with us to provide inclusive opportunities to our participants.

doubt that a small group of committed people can change the
world’.

may appear small in number, but their big hearts are
