ERC Update 4 April 2014 Demand for ERC Starting Grants stabilise s A t otal of 3272 proposals were submitted in the 2014 European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant competition - the first one under the new EU F ramework Programme Horizon 2020 - which closed on 27 March . This means that , after years of substantial increases in the number of applications received, the demand for Starting G rants has stabilised. This development can be partially explained by the recent ly introduc ed restriction s in re - submi ssions rules . Compared to t he 2013 call for Starting Grants that attracted 3329 applications , the demand this year decreased by around 1.7%. In addition to the new re - submissions rules , one factor that may have played a role is the fact that applications coming from research institutions based in Switzerland were for the first time not eligible in this competition . In this call, t he distribution by the th ree ERC domains was as follows: 1494 proposals were submitted in 'Physical Sciences and Engineering' , 1030 in 'Life Sciences' and 748 in 'Social Sciences and Humanities'. In the 2013 Starting Grant call , 300 top researchers were awarded grants of nearly €400 Million in total, with a success rate of around 9%. In this year's call, the overall call budget is € 485 Million . T he results of this call are expected to be published in the autumn of 201 4 . For more information ERC website
