Density Word Problems and Applications

(Common Core Standard G-MG.2) Practice applying concepts of density with an area and volume modeling situation.Slide2

What is Density??

Density is a measure of how much matter is in a certain volume or area .

This gold bar is quite small but has a mass of 1 kilogram (about 2.2 pounds), so it contains more matter than a similar sized piece of wood.

So gold is more dense than wood.Slide3

The density of water is about 1 kg per liter (1 liter of water has a mass of 1 kg), so anything that floats has a lower density, and anything that sinks is more denseSlide4

What conclusions can you draw??

Population Density measures the amount of people in an area:

The

population density of Rhode Island is 1017

people

per square mile.

The population density of Bristol is 2,250.82 people per square mile.

The population density of Tiverton is 502.65 people per square mile. Slide5

Practice Problem

Farmers in Field County are experimenting with new varieties of corn to see if they can increase their crop yield per acre. They planted 452 acres with

Lotsacorn

and collected a total of 69,110 bushels. They also planted 396 acres with

Cornaplenty

, which yielded a total of 59,637 bushels. Which of these statements most accurately describes the experiment?

(A)

Lotsacorn yielded 16% less per acre than Cornaplenty.

(B)

Lotsacorn

yielded 1.5% more per acre than

Cornaplenty

.

(C)

Cornaplenty

yielded 14% more per acre than

Lotsacorn

.

(D)

Cornaplenty

yielded 2.6% less per acre than

Lotsacorn

.Slide6

Practice Problem

Over a 24-hour period, brown bears counted 840 salmon swimming upstream, and they safely assumed that they only counted 30% of the total number of fish going by. The salmon-spawning haven along Copper River measures approximately 90,000 cubic meters of water. Given that the haven was empty before this week, that the salmon swim upstream at a constant rate, and that once they reach the haven, the salmon hang out there indefinitely, what will the population density of salmon in the Copper River spawning haven be after one week (to the nearest thousandth fish/m3)?

(A) 0.009 fish/m

3

(B) 0.031 fish/m

(C) 0.093 fish/m

(D) 0.218 fish/m

Be Careful when solving problems and take note of units. You may have to do unit conversions before solving for the missing quantity.
