With the Storming of the Bastille and the ‘capitulation’ of Louis XVI toward the National Assembly, Revolution in Paris had transformed the government from an absolutist monarchy to a constitutional monarchy: A constitution would be established by the end of August of that year. However, the effect of the storming of the Bastille was far ranging. As news of the Revolution spread around France, events took an even more dramatic turn. Predictably, there were municipal revolutions in the provincial cities and towns. However, in the country side, peasants fearing revenge from nobility and anxious toward the presence of ‘brigands’, armed themselves for the worse. When nothing happened, they attacked nobility and sought to literally remove the bonds of feudal dues, manorial dues and church tithes. Historian Georges Lefebvre refers to this ‘wave’ or the revolution as the ‘Great Fear’: A movement which saw the whole of the nation directly or indirectly involved in Revolution.
