Anything that has mass and takes up spaceSlide3
Substance
A single kind of matter that always has a specific makeup or compositionSlide4
Describing Matter
We describe matter using its properties
There are 2 types of properties
Physical Property: a characteristic of a substance that can change but does not produce a new substance
Chemical Property: a characteristic of a substance that changes it into a new substanceSlide5
Describing Matter
Metals and Nonmetals have different PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Metals: Luster, Conductors, Malleable, Ductile, High density
Nonmetals: Dull, Nonconductors
, BrittleSlide6
Physical Property
Melting Point: (32°F/0°C) Temperature at which a solid turns to liquid
Boiling Point: (212°F/100°C) Temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
Density: Amount of mass divided by the volume of a substance; Density of a substance does not change based on the quantity of the sample. Slide7
Physical Property
Conductivity:
The ability to act as an electrical conductor or insulator based on the object’s ability to complete a circuit
High Conductivity=Conductor (allows current to flow easily)
Low Conductivity=Insulator (current does not flow easily)
Color: NOT a reliable indicator
Hardness: The relative resistance of a substance to denting, scratching, or bending
MagnetismSlide8
Chemical Property
Ability to Burn: a substance reacting quickly to oxygen
Ability to Rust: a substance reacting slowly to oxygenSlide9Slide10
Physical Change
Does not change the composition of a substance, only the physical properties.
2 types of Physical Change:
Change in the state of matter.
Change in the shape or size (Cutting, tearing, dissolving, stretching, or wrinkling)Slide11
Chemical Change
The formation of one or more new substances with new properties.
Types of Chemical Changes
Color Change due to a change in the chemical composition
Temperature Change
Formation of Precipitate (A solid substance formed from two solutions)
Formation of a GasSlide12
The Law of Conservation of Mass
Matter is neither created nor destroyed regardless of the chemical or physical changes that occur.
